No, they cannot shoot Purple, assuming one of Red or Black is an enemy to Yellow. The rule doesn't care if closer units can't be shot at. In fact you can have silly situations like:

Rowboat Girlyman <----------------------10"-------------->Baneblade<------------------9.9"-------------------->A single Scout behind a wall and invisible.

and not be able to shoot Rowboat.

And that is why common sense isn't a good argument for rules discussions because the rules simply don't follow it.

I predict this post will cause massive amounts of rage.

I would kindly ask that you just ask in the forums as normal, always better to get multiple eyes on a question, especially for the more nuanced/subtle/complicated ones. I'm not infallible (at least not until The Device is complete).

BCB is correct. Rules be dumb, but that's what they be.

Also accurate.

That's a very good point. If all of Red and Black were CHARACTERS, then you could shoot purple, since you ignore other CHARACTERS when determining if a CHARACTER is the closest unit.

The reason this is how it works is to prevent what the rules writers called “Rhino-scoping” in recent interviews (and the interwebs did before that). Players would line up vehicles so that one of their other models had most of their view blocked and could only draw LOS to a character, then they would exploit the “closest visible” wording of the original Character Targetting rule to snipe the character.

The new wording may generate some unintuitive situations but if you understand why it was written it helps explain those oddities. The new wording is not a perfect solution but it’s less manipulatable.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
