Hello everyone,
Time for another battle rep! My first partner, Myelz, got called away to defend our nation somewhere... so my buddy, Joshua (my Custodes opponent from my last rep) took up his mantle for the emprah to team with my heretics. Threw up the invite to my gaming group and the results... we are facing Alex and Vinny; two seasoned veterans. Alex is known as a top tier tournament player for this area, and he travels all over North Carolina to throw some dice. We will be playing a mission out of
CA, to be determined on game day. This is exciting because its my first team game, so this will be a ton of fun though I think I'm gonna get smoked.... Without further adieu:

Pre-Game Thoughts
Team Chaos-todes: Our game plan: ALL THE OBJECTIVES! We have waves upon waves of disposible pawns to throw on random objectives and hope they live, again and again! But, we also have a very fast vanguard force; three bikers, three drones, two demon princes, and a jump lord with the awesome Axe o' fury. So hopefully we don't get tabled by wildly charging in hahahaha..... ha?
Team AngelCrons - Alex's thoughts: My thoughts are
DG are a tough cookie to crack. Without knowing missions my list is built around clearing mobs. I have a big unit of warriors, 2 units of immortals, cryptek, immohtek and 2 units of destroyers. Everything good in am army worth taking one of is better if you have 2. Usually one unit is going to get targeted first turn. We've both got 2 slow moving armies so it will be interesting to see how objectives are claimed if they are book missions. With restricted points, I'm going to have to rely on some good reanimation protocols and hope that key units stay alive long enough to make those rolls. Vinnys thoughts: my
DA gunline paired with the Assassins are a safe bet to face all odds. Especially now coming back from my short time away from the game where the
FAQ has been dropped, gunlines have some added protections since the Alpha Strike/Turn 1 drop. Seeing the mob of cultists, thank god Tide of Chaos can now only be used once per game.
Mission and Deployment
We rolled from
CA and got the mission where all objectives are 1
vp a turn, all kills are 1
vp, we also agreed each warlord was worth 1
VP. We go dawn of war deployment, so the field looked like this:
The field of battle....
Chaos-todes side
All the sneaky hiding robots
I didn't take pics of the Infiltrators, but the scouts took the top of the middle tower, the small ruins on the far right, and the last squad took up the ruins near the
devs. My zerkers infiltrated deep within the large ruins on the left; this would give them cover from the inevitable pewpew....
The Angelcrons won the roll off... then we seized! WOOHOO!
Turn 1 - Chaostodes
Movement sees all the guardsdudes and cultists move up to take various objectives and become a collective meatshield for all the bullets that will be coming our way (yay!). On the right side the bikers move up right behind a double wall of guards, while in the middle the drones and nurgle prince advance in a cluster. Lastly, the zerkers, sorcerer, and khorne prince move up on the left side, toward the
devs.
Psychic phase seems my nurgle prince fail to cast smite with a perils, resulting in me rerolling to save some wounds. The Sorcerer gets off warptime on the khorne prince, and smite kills a single scout.
Shooting the guard/cultists suck ass, while the mortars knock over 7 warriors. The drones clear the middle scouts with some low rolls.
Onto assault! The Khorne prince makes his charge into two
dev squads. The result? After all the craziness that they can do, he puts 7 wounds on him, leaving him at 1! Maybe I should have just charged one squad... One
dev popped due to overheat, tho. The zerkers charge the scouts and one
dev squad. The overall result: zerkers, who went first (I was stupid here) kill 7
devs from the front squad, and all the scouts. This leaves 3 plasma cannons left in combat. He interrupts me, and 4
devs hit and 2 wounds hit the prince... of course I fail both, so even a reroll wont save him.
We score 3 objectives, plus first blood and 2 scout squads. The
devs pass morale.
Blood for the blood god!
Left side of the field
Right side of the field
Score is Chaostodes 6, Angelcrons 1
Turn 1 - Angelcrons
This turn starts off as you may expect; all the devastators fall back from the zerkers. Immotekh my-will-be-done's the dudes on the left. 5/7 warriors come back, bastards. Warriors move up behind the large middle building. The
DA vets move up to shoot the zerkers, but otherwise stuff stays still.
Shooting is... well, devastating. On the left side, the Dark Angels use a strat to shoot after falling back; the results are as you would imagine. a ton of bolters and overcharged plasma cannon fire leaves them with 1 model left. A unit of guardsmen get popped on the right, a few cultists die, then crazy
happens; between one unit of Devastators w/ lascannons and a unit of destroyers, they kill two bloat drones... GG :/ They went down like a wet fart in summer. And at some point something killed 3 mortar teams as well; I was just appalled at how effective their fire was
In assault the dark angels vets charge the last khorne zerker, splattering the poor fella and taking that objective.
The angelcrons score 5 kills, and 3 objectives securing 8 points.
Poor zerkers :(
Our backfield is pew'd.
SO MUCH CARNAGE WHYYYYY
The score is Chaostodes 6, Angelcrons 9
Turn 2 - Chaostodes
That... hurt. But we aren't out of the game yet! We start by advancing the last drone up the center. The sorcerer flies up, and I move the
dp up as well. Cultists spread back out to cover objectives, while all the guardsmen advance to keep pressing up the field. The bikers fly up, ready to charge. This is where a critical mistake is made: we forget to place the terminators.....
Psychic phase sees me perils on smite... again.... ffs. I reroll to save some wounds and it still doesn't go off. I also didn't realize warptime was only 3" range... so I diabolic strength my remaining
DP for the lulz. The remaining
DP miasma's himself.
Shooting is... really ineffective. 36 hurricane bolter shots and 20 guard shots only see 4 of 5 of the remaining scouts go down. Yeah, you figure that out
lol. Mortars knock over a few warriors, while the cultists and guardsmen knock over 1 more warrior. The remaining drone does good work, knocking over 4 immortals in the middle.
Onto assault! on the right 2 of 3 biker captains fail their charges. The one that makes it takes 2 wounds, and knocks down 2 destroyers. In the middle the
DP makes it into the Cryptek and destroyers there, taking 1 wound to overwatch with some good rolls on my part. He kills the cryptek, who doesn't get back up, and knocks over a destroyer. The sorcerer charges the vets, because hes gonna die anyway so why not? He kills two, taking 2 wounds in return. the 10 Guardsmen that charged the last scout? Well.... they fail to kill him, and he punches a guardsmen in return.
The chaostodes score 4 objectives, and killed 1 unit for 5 points.
Sorcerer vs Dark Angels army.... hes got this.
Right side is lookin sad.
Demon prince holding the fort!
The immortals can see you....
The score is Chaostodes 11, Angelcrons 9
Turn 2 - Angelcrons
What'd you expect? All the destroyers fall back, as do the veterans. Only 1 destroyer and 1 immortal get back from WWB, and 4 warriors (damnit...). I really should have assaulted that unit. Movements simple; everything positions to blow the hell outta stuff.
Shooting.... heres the cliff notes: Demon prince, last drone, 1 cultist squad, 1 guard squad, 1 mortar squad, and the sorcerer all die... this leaves us with 1 mortar unit, 3 bikers, 2 cultist squads, and 2 guard squads left. Because it had taken 3 hours to get this far, I decided to call it after a debate broke out about the mathematical possibility of us winning (which at this point, I admit, was astronomically low).
The Dark Angels army was relatively unscathed, while the necrons could easily control all the objectives while simultaneously destroying our stuff. The ending result was Chaostodes 11, Angelcrons 15.
Game end state
Post game thoughts
Vinny (Dark Angels): *still waiting on word back
Alex (Necrons): Couple of failed charges held the custodes back, forgetting to deepstrike termis. Not sure what else.
Josh (Custodes): Joshes thoughts echoed Alex's; forgetting the Terminators as well as failing two biker charges really sealed the game, as well as that scout squad that refused to die.
James (
CSM/
DG): This was an extremely humbling game; before this point, I hadn't seen the cheese some armies were capable of. This was also the first game that made me realize why I love Nurgle above all else; they are durable and powerful. I like
CSM as well, but 8th makes them feel... squishy. I also realized now why
PBC's are played more than Drones; fly is nice and all, but that 1 toughness and 2 wound difference means a LOT. I played some rules wrong, such as warptime, and was quickly called out; which was big change. Both my opponents were smart, capable, and had lists that were assembled with one goal in mind; pew and destroy. I do feel that, had those termis come in and at least a second biker make its charge, this game may have turned out drastically different.
I did take a lot of lessons away from this game though, and will be a better player for this epic ass kicking. Drones I feel will be too fragile in the "new meta"; overcharged plasma will be more rampant, and lascannons galore. I mean, seriously, 5 lascannon shots hit two separate drones and they both went down...
PBC's I feel are just way better than drones currently, they're more durable and can still have a purpose if they're not within 9" (block
LOS to your stuff, shoot mortar/bolter, hold an obj, etc.). Drones MUST get into 9" to do anything. As well, I should have swung with my demon prince first in
CC; this would have resulted in a squashed devastator squad. Instead, they killed one of my major units with some
str 4 normal guys.... Also, Zerkers (while fun) are overkill on many units, and because you cannot swing on units you didn't charge in
CC, I feel like they're kinda... meh? The devestators would have ended up killing 7 or 8 of them on the charge without the prince going first. I think my list relied too heavily on the assault phase. A good, balanced approach would have been better; more long range shooting, etc. Maybe I'll pick up some Obliterators or Havoks in the future... If I did this all over again I probably would take 3
PBC's over the 3 drones.
Overall it was a great game. Thanks for reading!
