I'm looking for a program/app that lets me organize my 40k models(for collecting and painting, not playing).

Showing how many of a model I have, where they are stored, and similar useful info are required features.

Displaying info on what models i'm still missing for my collection. (would be nice to include FW models).

Having the added feature to show which models are in the acquire/build/prime/paint process would be an added bonus.

Two case scenarios:
I have a growing Necron collection and think i'm reaching full saturation of having one of each... only to find out i'm missing some character or a FW model.
I'm tinkering with the idea of adding an Adeptus Mechanicus but I'm at a loss to know what is all out there.

Many thanks in advance for reading and giving feedback!

sounds like a job for a pretty simple generic database to be honest

you could do most of it with a spreadsheet and a few filters on columns

The lynchpin is finding a pre-compiled list of what GW has made for each army.

Besides, spreadsheets are not the most visually conservative with the data.

A day or so of grunt work (or finding lists others have compiled) and you could easily pull together a spreadsheet to hold that info. A few smart filters or tabs (race, subfraction, unit type -much like the website) and you could manage the verbosity to your heart's content.

Maybe just do the armies you have or out a sharable version on Google Sheets and try to encourage people to fill out missing info.

For exact that reason, I made a spreadsheet after finding Kanban solutions unviable for my purpose.
Though I don't care for completing a collection, so I only list the stuff I need.
Storage, box, content (units mostly), sub-content (single models in the unit), affiliations 1/2, and the status of that model (NiB, built, painted, etc)

I just sort with the columns.

Your problem is if you have options in the units.
Knowing what models you have is one thing. Being able to make units out of them is totally different.
I think Battlescribe has something built in. I might be thinking of Army Builder.

I tried using a spreadsheet like that, and gave up very soon into it.

A technical solution may actually be overkill. I have a lot of miniatures and need more than a list to keep track of them.

For all my unpainted minis, I keep them organized in cardboard boxes and use 3x5 cards to indicate what's in each box. When I remove something to paint it, I cross it off. The boxes are stored in several closets in my basement, all I need to do is open the door to see what's there. Chaos / Inquisition in one closet, Orks / Eldar in another, and other Chaos / IG / Fantasy / books in another.

My painted models are kept in the same closets. For Land Raiders, Predators, Rhinos, etc, they are kept in Snaptite boxes. This makes it simple to just pull the ones I use for games when I need them. For large models, like Heldrakes / Dreadnoughts / Daemon Princes / Kharbydis Assault Claws (which don't fit easily in Snaptight) I keep them on the shelves. When it's time to transport them, I can either carry them or wrap them appropriately. For individual miniatures, I have them in GW cases sitting at the bottom of the closets, and know what's in each case.

Spreadsheets or an online tool would hold me back, because they might tell me what I have, but wouldn't necessarily tell me where it's stored.

With a spreadsheet, just add column(s) for location and container no.
