Simple enough question, how do you folks deal with BTR spam?

Game I played last night, it was against two companies of them, full of infantry. I was playing a Mech Infantry/M60 Company list, and I just couldn't come close to putting out enough firepower to even put a sizeable scratch in him. Othe games I watched, the Russian APC/Infantry spam list just seems to be unstoppable.

I haven't played against BTRs, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But I would hazard a guess that the solution is the same it's always been for horde armies - maximize the firepower, particularly the template weapons. Given the number of models that your opponent likely had on the table, I would imagine that it would be difficult for him or her to keep everything in cover, so there should be plenty of things to shoot at. Break BTRs, kill or pin the infantry with artillery (even with good Soviet morale, they're going to fail 1 in 3 tests), place mines in key locations (make sure that you've got units that can see those locations so your opponent can't clear the mines without coming under fire), and otherwise do everything that you can to slow your opponent down. The longer he takes to reach you, the more casualties he takes, and the better your chances of whittling him down to manageable size.

And don't forget the mortar platoons! While the BTRs will likely ignore mortars, advancing infantry don't particularly care whether it's a mortar or a 155 that's dropping shells on them. And unlike the M109s, you can take a platoon of mortars in every company in your force.

found when playing Soviets (don't have the carriers to spam properly as yet) the thing that murders them is that while they are very good at crossing the table they are utter pants at doing anything when they get there.

Assaults basically don't work and a dug in NATO force takes a fair bit of shifting

blow the support units up and have your infantry keep their heads down so 6+ to hit and when the Soviets get close its not hard to bounce them out of combat.

TY is an interesting game, just a shame BF adding infantry almost as an after thought and utterly mucked it up.

Template stuff can hurt advancing infantry, but only if they move slowly, a decent Soviet player will be going hell for leather forwards since thy can't really hurt you on the move anyway so may as well not bother.

Snipe the stuff that matters, you can deal with the infantry with mechanised MG that you keep out of sight when they get closer

I don't know what your experience in assaults has been like. But my experience has been that the Soviets don't need to worry so much about getting huge numbers of hits in assaults (at least against my US troops; West Germans with better motivation is a different matter). It's the failed counterattack tests that end up getting the NATO player in trouble.

they only need to make that test though if they are unable to get 5-8 hits on troops needing a 3+ to hit otherwise the assault never actually happens

It is a nigh unstoppable list with almost any armored formation. The only list I have seen beat it at 50% rate is a British mechanized company supported by artillery and tons of scorpions Reece.

There are two lists that need toning down it is the T-55 spam lists and the BTR spam lists.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against it. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the end comes.

Its not so much that they need toning down, as BF need to realise they have the entire points basis for the game utterly wrong, having focused on the good armour as a baseline then under costed just about everything on foot and cheaper armour that can't really hurt the heavies

It's definitely an issue. I'll be honest even just reading through the rules (and especially after a game or two) you can see that it's not well balanced. I'm amazed it passed through play testing.

Something that's definitely in need of an FAQ, I'm self moderating with my own force but obviously that's not going to work if you're playing in a tournament.

hmm, as a west german collector now that i have been explained how TY works in comparisment to FoW ww2 late war, i was thinking of bringing max amount of luch(rof 3) and gepards(rof 5) to try and stop this scurge alongside 5 leo 2s in a 100p army.
im allso thinking about LARS whit their salvo template.

i cant match the sheer number of the BTR spam but im hoping my dmg output is enugh to halt/stop them.

So I played against a BMP and T55 spam army last weekend. I had a Mech Infantry company with some Abrams for support.

Played the Bridgehead mission, I think it was. The one where the defender basically auto loses. I had 2 platoons on the table against his entire army.

Somehow I actually won, but how I dealt with the BMP's was VADS, and my 1 infantry platoon refusing to fail a single 3+ save.
