Bought a Stormsurge and a second Riptide so I have to try them out right?! Still keeping it a small 1500 point list since I'm still getting used to the 8th edition Tau codex so my firebase of the SS and 2x RIP takes up 2/3 of my army points.

I went with the Dal'yth sept for my SS to give it a 2+ save since I'll be putting down the anchors turn 1 and hopefully not moving it.

I went with a Vanguard detachment for some marker support instead of 2 squads of 5 pathfinders in the hopes of keeping marker support alive longer into the game than what I've been seeing. I figure with the ability to hit on 2+/3+ and reroll failed to hit rolls the Sa'cea Sept provides, combined with the uplink markerlight stratagem I should have enough marker support. I also took the Puretide chip to help with the command point drain but starting with 9 is quite nice. Thanks new FAQ .

The two 10 man squad of FW will be near Darkstrider to use his +1 wound ability and shield the firebase. The two breachers can move forward to take some early objectives if needed and the other 5 man squad of FW can sit on a board edge somewhere to help hold another objective/deny deep strike space on a flank. All the shield drones will protect my riptides. The Tau sept should help with charges.

You don't have much in terms of Markerlights, it may be worth swapping the Shield Drones for Marker Drones.

Split your Fire Warriors into 5 before they all die a horrible morale death. Also the drones you're taking per unit are going to count as there own unit, and its just easy kill points. If you dropped them you can add an ethereal to your "Vanguard" detachment (which is short one Elite choice and not valid/legal). By increasing number of troops and getting another ethereal and cutting the drones, you can have 2 battalions for 4 more Command Points.

In regards to the number of Markerlights 2 5 man squads hitting on a 4+ will give me an average of 5 per turn. With my 4 I am averaging 3.722 (DS will be able to reroll 1's because he'll be near the Ethereal, the Cadre and FM can reroll one failed hit roll per turn because of their sept choice). So I'm in better shape than you think. Plus this way they are all characters and cannot be targeted when you know those two squads will be gone after turn 1 or 2. Plus there are plenty of stratagems to use that can increase marker hits.

Darkstrider's ability only adds +1 wound to a single infantry squad. To make that worth while you want at least a 10 man squad. I am going to combine this with the focus fire stratagem and can wound a leman or Magnus, or whatever on a 3+ with a firewarrior,

Also, the Ethereal is nearby and can use his leadership and with the bonding knife ritual where you pass on a 6 it's not that bad.

If it's a kill point game then I obviously just take two squads of 4 instead of all the individual units but in no circumstance am I going to drop them. If you haven't used shield drones to protect a riptide before you're missing out.

No one is saying not taking shield drones is good, just dropping them out of individual units and taking say three squads is just better, you're technically supposed to have an army list before the game scenario is determined so you shouldn't be able to pick and choose when you have them in a squad or not and it would allow you to take an outrider detachment instead of your vanguard detachment (which currently does not have enough elite choices).

Definitely agree that you should look to field those drones in a single unit for the purpose of avoiding easy killpoints. Really like the Darkstrider, helps your gunline in case you run in to a pile of transports or MC. At 1500 pts the enemy ought to have a hard time burning through all that heavy suit armour.

Now the downsides: for one, there isn't a whole lot of redundancy in your markerlight setup; while the fact that they're all characters helps a ton, only 4 means you guaranteed need to spend CP to hit that lovely 5 markers. This would be alright, if not for point 2; you're a little short on CP for the unit you're running. Riptides are pretty CP-hungry to operate at peak efficiency, which you'll need them at to deal with enemy vehicles and heavy infantry. I suspect you'll find yourself running dry earlier than you'd want, particularly if you're spending CP on uplinked markerlights or the Sa'Cea flavoured version.

Consider breaking those troop choices into some smaller squads and going for a second battalion instead of a vanguard for the extra 4 CP: you'll be able to fit all the vanguard markerlights into a battalion, and it'd have the added benefit of making your list legal without having to make a Riptide Sa'Cea sept. Overall this list may come off as a wee bit gimmicky, But big suits is cool. Would love to hear how the Stormsurge works out for you!

Definitely gimmicky, this is the list I have been running in 8th with great success: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/753426.page

Just have to try out the SS and x2 Riptides, got a game scheduled this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.
