Hi there I'm a new "painter" and wanted to get some help here.

I saw a lot of videos before I tried my first painting of a miniature. I think it looks ok, yet I ask myself what I could improve.
The highlights feel a little bit lost and I'm afraid to use a brighter colour.

Maybe you guys could give me some input so I can improve myself.

Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker.

TERRIBLE!
Nah, looks good.

Things that pop out to me is shading and highlighting. You might look at using a brighter highlight brown. I see it a bit when I really zoom in on the large pic, but otherwise I have trouble seeing it. Possibly a darker tan for them?

Also, you might look at a brown or sepia toned wash. It'll darken up the "lower" areas of the model, give some depth to it as a bonus, it helps cover any hidden areas of the model you couldn't get a brush in. Just make sure to use your brush to suck back up any that's just sitting in a high area.

This one isn't a technique, but you might look at getting a second color mixed into the scheme to help get some color separation. It doesn't have to be anything big, but silver edges on the Pauldrons, tan kneepads/ Pauldrons or anything like that would help break up the single color. It might sound a bit odd, but think how the red shorts on superman help his outfit break his outfit into distict parts and makes it easier for your eyes to focus on single parts.

Finally, I just pin a single leg when I'm putting the model in and it holds well with super glue. It might make your life easier than having to measure out the whole distance before hand on every model. You just have to make sure you have whichever foot lined up where you want it.

Really well done for a first try. As to highlights, it's a stylistic choice. You've gone with subdued tones, so subdued highlights are just fine. Brighter highlights will pop at a distance, but look a bit strong up close.

I'd recommend painting some wash into the recesses of the model (not washing the entire model - just the joints between plates. This will define the plates better and make the highlights stand out a bit more by having nearby contrast.

If you're unhappy with how that looks, then by all means go ahead and try a stronger highlight.

Thank you guys.

I will try to do so.

Maybe I will colour the knee pads other. And then I will wash him a bit and use a brighter brown to highlight.

I will update as soon as possible.

Looks good. Really like the base especially. One thing that stood out to me was the arms. They look to be almost a different colour to the rest of the body, but I'm not sure they are or are meant to be. If you've mixed colours to get your base paint, and have tried to mix it again, it may have been slightly different (as is usual when I try it myself). Or it might just be the photograph and I'm imagining it, or, it could be the highlights. There seems to be more shadows on the rest of the mini. A wash would probably help tie it all together either way.

And your English is better than some native speakers. It's nice to have a well written, clear topic to reply to.

I used the same colour but maybe I layered it more there?! Or it might be the light..not really sure...shall I layer it again then?

Yeah, the base really looks good, and it doesn't take away from the model one bit.

If I was going to improve the model, I would add more contrast. I'd like to see more definition on the panel lines on the arm, I'd like to see an edge highlight on the gun.

Maybe some pin washes and extreme highlights? You can use Google to find more information about these techniques if they are not familiar.

But I agree - this model already looks very good.

A good sepia wash and a touch of red somewhere. Just a little bit of squad markings in red to contrast.

Great job for a first go! Mine was a disaster.

Thank you very much. What colour would your recommend for the gun highlights?

And pin washes and extreme highlights? I will google that. Thank you very much. I hope to make it look better.

Thank you all so far, it really helps me. And thank you for your kind words.

Thank you. Do I wash only in the corners or the whole body? I did that but layered over it?!

I would usually base coat, then wash the whole lot, tidy up with a bit more base where the wash is too heavy then highlight. Then add detail. As a general rule, that's my process for a tabletop standard trooper. Looks like You've already got that far so I'd say from here on it's all just your own preference. There is no rule that says the right way to do this. Your way will quickly become the right way for you.
