Hi there was wondering if anyone had recommendations for base sizes on orks

My friend was suggesting I swap to 32" (mm woops) for most of my infantry, and that it wouldn't be a problem for most people as it's a slight disadvantage (numb of attacks), I'm almost certainly going to do this with my nobz and lootas, but I'm on the bench with my boyz.
Another thought I have for boyz is transitioning them onto a less traditional base size, say around 28.5mm.

I'm contemplating using the large oval bases, the one the Dakkajet uses, for my squiggoth and trukks, is this frowned upon? Does anyone here base their vehicles?

Lastly I'm looking for a good suggestion for base sizes for the Big Gunz, and Mek Gunz, as I'm not using official models and I'm not certain of the footprint of the GW models and I want to give them some uniformity.

The setting is just a small semi-local store that hosts a few small competitions every month or so, I'm more into the hobby for creative aspect, but I don't want people to feel like I'm modelling for advantage.
At worst I may have to spoke the feet and drill the bases, but I want to run the (hopefully) better-looking bases as often as possible.

As a side-note does PVA work better or worse with MDF than plastic, specifically looking to add some grit/sand, found PVA peels off half the time :(

Cheers!

I personally like the 25mm bases on the boyz. I do not mind their feet sticking off the edges, it kind of seems orky to me.

I also like how they look when bunched up, with very little space between them. They seem more aggressive, shoving each other to get to the front.

It would also differentiate them from the elites & heavies.

I don't think you have to worry about MF(dis)A...unless the ork codex turns out to be so OP that everyone will complain. Pretty safe there, I'm sure.

With GW's ever increasing model # and infeasibility of using bigger board(bigger simply doesn't fit) never going to base them on 32. Boards are already too cramped as it is without increasing area boyz require.

Mine are all based (except for the Warboss) on the 25mm bases they came with.

My Boyz are on 25mm - larger doesn't make sense, and you need to fit in as many as you can

My Nobz/Special units are on 32mm - both to simply fit the miniature, and to show they're different from regular boyz (Lootas/Burna boyz esp need the larger base)

I am in the process of putting my Trukks/battlewagon on bases - somewhat aesthetic reasons, but mainly because I do a lot of weathering and the handling is causing damage to that even with it being fixed etc. Also, less bits fall off. It's just easier to have them on a base. I didn't like the idea at first, but after actually playing with them, I'm definitely in the base the vehicles camp.

Mek Gunz etc, I do not have on a base, not sure I would suggest one. They're fairly small if you use the GW kit only (I have a bunch I've converted so they're irregular shapes). Also, you now have to have grots to fire them, within a set distance (I think it's 3" but I forget) - if you don't, the gunz are down. Grots aren't just for show for them anymore, so to fit the grots in easily, I'd say don't put the Gunz on a base, and definitely don't put the grots manning them on the base

re: MDF - make sure you prime it. I also tend to use woodglue, rather than regular PVA, or a tacky glue. Once your grit/pva mixture's all down, and *dry*, go over it with a fixative, a watered down PVA. I use less water in the case of MDF as it can cause expansion, and be aware it will reactivate the previous layer of PVA. But once that second layer is dry, it'll be hard as nails and good to go. Once you're completely done, spray it with a matte varnish (or gloss, then matte) to lock it all in and allow for table top gaming.

All of my Boyz size units are on 25's. I have used a piece of cork board for basing that sticks out where feet attach slightly further from the plastic base underneath. Makes attaching them easier.

Another Boyz basing trick is to cut two small pieces of thick plastic card the size of the Orks feet, glue them to the bottom the feet and then glue the boy onto the base. The slight elevation keeps their feet from looking stuck in the mud when you apply rocks or sand to the base.

I've used a flyer oval for my squigoth and it works well, I've used 32mm on my stormboyz as they are tall motels and prime to falling over. Wish I had on my nobz too. I play in a very chilled group where we don't care about bases but some groups are less relaxed I believe. It'd be a massive pain rebase all your infantry. I'd leave it.

Cheers for your answers guys! Will try Elites and Heavies on the 32mm (once I've figured out my look), I've not really mounted most of them, if it looks good maybe that'll swing me over to the boyz, but I agree 32mm seems excessive .

I think I'd like to base the Kannons as there's a few things I'd like to do, like have multiple small matchlock cannons mounted as 1 kannon. Is a 60mm base too excessive in people's opinion? idk as I don't own the current models.

Here's a couple of the standard kit Gunz, on a Dreadnought base (should be 60mm iirc)

Hope that helps!

That looks pretty spot on, thank you for sharing, could almost get away with having a 60mm + 2*25mm crew on a 100mm parent base for movement.
We'll see though lol

Also - I chuckled a bit as you 1st said 32". I think that would be too big for a Warlord Titan!!

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

My mdf bases have arrived, as you can see I might be going with a 60mm base on a 100mm base with two 25mm base krew slots, maybe some jungle terrain or something

Thanks for the help guys!

I like them but was thinking something like 70MM for my Mek guns, I found a seller on Ebay for those. My krew will be off sides on their own bases though. I'm in the process of rebasing my entire collection. Not changing base sizes just making the bases look interesting and themed. I'm well over 200 junk yard bases done now with another 400 to go. I o wish I could fins 20MM bases for my grots. I may still look for some.

Sigh, Yet another doomed attempt by man to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds

Sounds like a pain, I'm sure it'll look good though, my base game has been poor so I feel your desire to improve, 70mm is probably a good bet, hope it works out!
