I am writing a very un-40kish short story as a background for my next army.
For tying it in the setting i would like to map the area in which it is located to 40k terminology.

So, does anybody know in which sector aquarius would be located or where i might look for that information?

The map of the 40K galaxy maps slightly hazily to real galactic maps. Remember that the stars that make up a constellation only appear close together in our sky due to line of sight. They may in fact be separated by huge distances and some stars may be closer to Earth than to each other.

For this reason I cannot tell you where Aquarius is as it is not in one place in the galaxy with its stars spread out along a narrow corridor.

It would be more accurate to describe it as a direction. If you look towards Aquarius you are looking roughly in the direction of the border between between Segmentum Obscurus and Segmentum Ultima but also looking south of the Galactic plane at an angle of about 45-degrees.

I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.

Perfect - thanks!
I wanted to keep the question as simple as possible - and actually assumed that GW would not have put as much thought in matters like this.
But of course you are right with everything that makes the question more complicated than what my request implicated.

The direction is absolutely sufficient.
Actually, i refer to two elements in aquarius that from earth appear to be close to each other, but in reality are located behind each other with the distance of puny 650 ly (Trapist-1 and the helix nebula aka "the eye of god")

So, if by chance asking for the helix nebulas location allows for a more specific answer i can make the thing even more (pseudo-) precise - but i think the direction might suffice since i doubt anybody would actually check :-)

Can you recommend a source for a map?

The Helix Nebula is very close (only 700 LY away) which would put it right in Segmentum Solar. Not quite on Terra's doorstep but definitely in its neighbourhood.

... which shows that dimensions in 40k are just a little bit larger than i assumed.
It seems that i need to change a few things in that case.
Now i should check what refering to "sector command" implies... but that i should be able to find out.

But it makes for another ironic twist that the story takes place so close to Terra.
Such a pity that dakkadakka does not actually have a sub-forum to publish the story in.

Thanks again, you are VERY helpfull.

You may find these handy as they define Segmenta, Sectors and subsectors.

Thanks again - i already found those earlier today and am still trying to locate the nebula to determine the sector.
The definitions are helpfull - for the moment i am at least pretty sure that i am outside sector solar.
