No, he wasn't present at the campaign, Dantioch was the leader. I don't think he is intended to look older, just fw aren't always great at sculpting faces.

The Primarchs Peturabo book is what you are looking for, he was indeed fighting the H'rud
So I'm not sure it's always aging, and even a "aged" primarch could smash hell out of any non primarch.
