Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I am dusting off my Warmachine collection which has not seen light of day for five years.

I have a number of Mk2 rulebooks, and a few Mk1, and while I know that Mk3 has free download of core rules, I wonder if the switch is worthwhile.
Should I play I will be providing both armies, none of my friends collect Warmachine and I have four smallish faction forces, mostly older models from the earliest days.

Are the Mk3 rules so superior that it is best to bite the bullet and buy new army books and core rules here and now, or is it largely a waste of money to upgrade.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Cards and rules are freely available on PPs homepage. I think mk3 is the game everyone always wanted it to be. It’s not drastically different from mk2 but power up finally makes battlegroups interesting and relevant parts of the game.

Yeah, you don't need to buy any rules or books. Everything but the unit cards is here:

and here's the unit cards:

The base rules are not THAT different, but they do favour warjacks far more than MkII did, so if you like big stompy robots then you might want to go ahead and make the switch.

One possible issue you may find though is that the rules and stats are far more fluid now; PP are constantly making tweaks and changes. This means stupidly OP stuff is far less common as it usually gets nerfed before too long, but it does take more effort to stay up to date and it becomes harder to remember everything without constantly going back to the cards because of the constant small changes. Also it means that stuff you bought but couldn't use because it was crap has a chance of becoming useable again, but you should be careful about buying multiples of one model because spam lists (or models that are so good that you have a reason to run three or more) tend to get nerfed eventually.

Also the game is all about themes now (at least at the competitive level); I guess casual players might still play out of theme to run whatever they want but all anyone talks about online are theme lists, which are fairly restrictive and somewhat repetitive. Basically you can run any caster in a theme (unlike in MkII), themes don't really have tiers anymore, they just have advantages that encourage you to build a certain way. Typically these are free solos for each 20-ish points of a certain type of model - eg. one free solo for each 20 points of infantry - but also other things like advanced move or trenches etc. These are often also dependent on your list, eg. one warjack get advanced move for each unit in your army.

That's not going to be a problem, going by the OP. I mean, if he's considering staying with mk 2, then he's not interested in chasing the current state. Just save the cards for the models you have as PDFs and then you never need to trouble yourself with what PP are up to again.

Thanks for the replies.

@LunarSol If I do move to Mk3 I will end up buying the books and datacards. I dont like working from .pdfs
Mk2 was a nicely packaged product and I like 'tidy' gaming.
If Mk3 is worth it I will upgrade, but its mainly a point of is Mk2 actually bad in comparison?

@TheWaspinator Thanks for the links I will see what the fuss is about at least.

@SoulSamurai PP like to keep ahead of the meta to keep the game more or less fair, they have done a good job over time IMHO, providing balance and high power play is a hard juggling cat and some balls will get dropped.
Thankfully I am not chasing the meta. Yep Khador in Mk2 'should' be played with one jack and an infantry horde. I have six jacks and a few squads of infantry plus characters and a dog. Make do citizen defend the Motherland with what you have!

@AndrewGPaul Exactly, and its the beauty of hosting, yes this unit is overpowered, pity I dont have it. That Cryxian known overpowered infantry unit, yep, *that* one, and the other one, I do have, because I dont have many Cryxians and you will have to fill up with bonejacks. My collection is based on an ebay lot and a Dakka swap of Mk1 stuff. So I bolt in the swings and roundabouts.

Since they moved to having the digital card database they don't sell physical cards any more. The idea is to print your own so they can keep them up to date easier.
