I’m pretty sure I’m going to answer my own question, but I’ve had a quick search and can’t find an answer to this particular situation, apologies if it’s already here.

So it’s the character rule post FAQ. But this case involves a Basilisk, or other unit that doesn’t require line of sight. So the situation is I have a character in the open, in front of him in LOS blocking terrain is a squad who will be nearer to the Basilisk.

Can the Basilisk fire at the Character? Or does the new character FAQ mean it will still have to fire at the unit in cover as even tho it can’t get LOS, they are nearer, and the Basilisk doesn’t need LOS anyway?

The way we played it was, it can’t shoot the Character due to the other unit bring nearer and the basilisk doesn’t require LOS anyway.

The character rule doesn't if you ignore LOS.

If there is another non-character unit closer, regardless of LOS, you can't shoot the character.

All ignoring LOS does is let you ignore the "visible" part of the Character Rule, it still has to be the closest unit.
