Well, title says it all really. Having started a Tyranid army recently I have found an interest in horde armies, and want to start an Ork force alongside it to switch between the two. What's best to get in terms of starting?

Wait for the Codex to come out (June/July rumored).
Re-evaluate from there.
The Index is garbage, the only viable list is maximum Boyz (Boyz, Stormboyz, Kommandos); everything else isn't good.

Horde armies are GLORIOUS to play, giving you the TRUE feeling of commanding an army and not a handful of guys.
I'd suggest allying GSC to Tyranids to enjoy a myriad of gameplay options between the two armies (and with the Codex coming real soon you will be highly competitive too)

I have been very tempted by the Mega Armoured Nobz, build one up as a warboss and the rest as bodyguard surrounded by Boyz. I also really want a bubblechuka cannon just for the name.

First step is to evaulate whether or not you have the patience, time and commitment to actually paint an army that requires that many models.

and get a box to experiment with, orks can be painted fast and still look good, but you need to come up with a scheme specifically designed to do it or it just looks pants

This is a good point. You're going to want a lot of boyz, and they're arguably more of a slog to get painted than other horde armies. What you should get depends really on whether you're looking to build a "competitive" army, or if you're in it for the fun. Either way though, you can't really have too many Boyz.

The OP apparently already plays a horde Tyranid force so I think they're fine on that front.

Look up 'painting with washes', a common method of doing loads of orks at once.

You'll likely need the index for like half the HQ's and their wargear options though...

If you don't want to wait for the codex I'd suggest getting the Start Collecting box and the Ork Battleforce Kult of Speed box (it appears to still be available). They both contain units that aren't the best right now, but there is a good variety of units so you'll be ahead of the game when the Codex drops but you probably won't have to shelve most of your army.
In addition to the two boxes I would look for someone selling a used Ork army of mostly AOBR models on eBay or Facebook. The deals aren't nearly as good as they were a year ago, but it will still allow you to bulk out your army relatively inexpensivey.

probably not if you are just starting out though and lack the back catalogue of older models

You\ll almost certainly want for example kustom force fields apart from mega armour bik mek which needs huge boost to be worth it. And won't be much help for fast army for which you need biker one which is unlikely to be in codex.
And you know you can get models outside from what GW sells now? Don't think there's ever been biker mek model w/KFF yet players use it...

I would honestly say the best start for Orkz is finding leftover Assault on Black Reach boxes and halves.
Those Boyz have made up the bulk of my 80+ Slugga Boyz mob, and the kits are sturdy in their three piece snapfit design that i just lug around a whole storage container of them without much breakage.
Now, if youre into Shoota Boyz, then go with the multi part set. After that, pick a few key units to define the army and create a theme.
The Nobz box will have enough bitz to last a while. Most of the Ork kits contain enough bitz to really get creative with kitbashing. With a bit of creativity you can build either Lootaz, or Burnaz, and keep the spare bitz to make both. Loot any other armies vehicle that you like, and with a few gibbinz, dagz, and battle damage, it will fit into your Ork army.
I would start to collect the Boyz now since they will always be crucial, but might hold off on the more elite stuff till the Codex comes out.
My own army is in Hiatus now till the Codex. I have been painting every Mob a different Clan color appropriate to their speciality but that might end up screwing me in a few months when we get propa Clan rules.

If you don't mind stripping paint, get 10 "practice" boyz on ebay, remove any paint and try out some color schemes.
Like others have said, our index is one of the worst internally balanced ones out there, and we have no idea if GW cares or not. You will hear a lot of hope here on dakka, and a lot (probably more) doom and gloom.
I would not consider buying anything expensive until the codex drops. While you wait, you can mention that to GW.

You like Nids, you like hordes. The place to start is boxes of boyz.
Every box of boyz contains 8 boyz, one Nob, and one rokkit boy. Build every rokkit boy and use him as a tankbusta.
I lose a lot of games because I am fielding mech, but I field 20 to 30 tankbustas on the regular and they never fail to make an impact

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works. |

I am looking to start orks as well. The Kromlech greatcoat orks have always been a passion project idea for me and orks are literally the only army I haven't played at some point(also nids, but i hate bug armies in any scifi). Looking to pick up 90 boyz(60 shootas, 30 sluggas), 6 kustom mega cannons, ton of their awesome characters and i already purchased 30 GW stormboyz.

11 models total so you are off 1 boy. Still rokkits good though not all need 20 plus rokkits and even less need 20 nobs. Also 4 ork boxes are cheaper to bulk out slugga boyz.

The latest rumour for it is November/December along with some slaanesh stuff, I'm guessing early November. June and July will dedicated to AOS 2nd edition and the new armies they announced for it. I would recommend getting the start collecting box, the kult of speed box and just assemble and paint them until the codex comes out. Maybe even look at all the clans as that might change how you build and paint your orks. like if you decide to do death skulls you could kitbash bikers with space marine bikes showing they loot and use equipment from other factions.
