Werewolf? really? Come on cryptozoologists, you more than anyone ought to know it takes silver to kill a werewolf- and that they turn back into humans when they die.
At best it may be a wolfwere.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them for loose grammar.
The coyote crossbread looks like a really good option, they are everywhere, but normally they fight (and lose) with wolves. Coyotes are even spreading into Mexico and will eventually get further south.

Its probably a wolf-dog hybrid with the dog part being something shaggy. It doesn't look like your typical Coywolf, so I doubt its one of those.

When I saw the size I got really confused about the werewolf statement. Do cryptozoologists think when people turn into werewolves they also shrink to half their size or?

Chances are its a wolf-dog hybrid.
It might be more than one generation removed so it might not be pure-wolf which might be why it looks different to some others (which I guess is why this made it as news).
wolf-dogs are also far less fearful (typically) of human settlements which often means they get shot/caught or cause trouble more than pureblood wolves (which are far more weary in general of humans).
In countries with established feral dog populations wolf-dog hybrids are a serious problem as they both weaken pure wolf populations in terms of breeding and also increase human-animal interactions (in the negative) which can result in increased persecution of all predatory canids (including wolves).

I have met two wolf-dog hybrids in my life, and the only term that comes to mind when describing their personality is... Dippy.
One got her nose badly scratched when she went to sniff a cat. (Yes, sniff... this is not the brightest wolf-dog in the kennel.)
Sweet nature, but, well... dippy.
There used to be a place up near Rangely Lakes in Maine that bred them.

it'll be a wolf dog or similar - the real world is not that interesting.

I dunno, remember when a fisherman caught something weird and it turned out to supposedly be extinct 60 million years?
Coelacanth? Interesting - but no mermaid, Deep One etc

Theoretically Dire Wolves could have a small population somewhere in North America undiscovered, perhaps intermingled with regular wolves. Unlikely, but possible.

If you mean coelacanth you wouldn’t remember that because it was 80 years ago they were rediscovered by fishermen. Giant squid have been found before that. Such large, thought to be extinct, creatures turning up is very rare given how widespread humans are. It’s more likely to happen in the sea because it’s so vast but on land is much less likely. Would love a new species to be found but most likely this is a deformity, a hybrid or hoax.

Well the fishermen had been catching them since forever. It was just a scientist happened by the local fish market and saw it one day.

The chances of a large breed mammal like a wolf being undetected this long in a developed country like America is very very small. You've more chance of such species appearing in countries where there is far less human density and where there are large areas totally unstudied or even isolated from other areas. Eg there's some big new advances and discoveries of bat and rodent populations in jungle basins where the geography of the land has resulted in them being isolated species.
But a dire-wolf is very very unlikely. Most larger mammals and species (esp in developed countries) are under enough intense habitat pressure and we've lost the vast majority of mega-fauna. Don't forget it wasn't long ago that wolves were being heavily pushed out of the USA in many areas, even big national parks like Yellowstone have had to have reintroductions to restore populations.

Wolfdogs born and bred in the wild can survive in the wild so dippy domestic breeds might be the results of upbringing, though it could just as much depend on the parents (esp the dog breed involved, but also the wolf as well).

You're overestimating exactly how populated some of these areas are. When we're talking about some places in the midwest, you can go hours without coming across large population centers.

Ehhhh....Yellowstone had to have reintroductions because of the fact that local farmers went after the populations while they were younger or they poisoned them with bait whenever possible. The farmers are still one of the biggest issues to have the wolf population in Yellowstone come back since they'll shoot them and claim they thought it was a coyote.
There's a fascinating book called "Can't Chew the Leather Anymore" about the subject if you'd like to read more.
