So I was trying to come up with an interesting background for my Imperial Knight army seeing as the range just increased immensely.

I originally had the idea to make it a 'Freeblade Household', basically a conglomerate of freeblades that one way or another come together with a common goal, pool resources, etc.

But a friend of mine gave me the cool idea of making them kind of like Deathwatch, each knight is from a different household, sent for one reason or another to this group (whether it be for atonement, glory, etc.)

Would that be too lore breaking? And if it is, is the 'freeblade household' idea a good one? I know knights are supposed to be, well, knightly, but I want something a little against the grain.

No such thing as "Lore breaking" IMO, as long as you do it well.

Sounds like a decent idea to me. A group of knights on a pilgrimage, or perhaps a penitence.

There are a few examples in the previous knight codex of Freeblades working in tandem. Similarily, Knight Worlds that are close together or houses that share a world (Wasnt Sanctus Reach like that?) could team up to fight their enemies.

It sounds like a good idea to me. Sounds like the Knights Templar or Knights Hospitaller or something. Knights from all over who have dedicated themselves to work together for a common goal.

Doesn't sound too implausible that Freeblades would group together in some circumstances.

Heck, a group of them would likely find it much easier to travel given a cruiser probably has space for multiple knights it would share the fuel burden.

Both ideas sound fine to me. Freeblades could easily group together for a common goal and then remain due to bonds of friendship or honour. Likewise even houses separated by large distances could have honour debts or treaties to combine there forces under a single banner for military or political reasons.


Myself I'm planning on a force of House Terryn Knights that have been on campaign for so long they are almost freeblades. With many of there pilots being either second generation nobles born and raised away from Voltaris or promising commoners recruited along the way.

I coukld see freeblades coming together, maybe even eventually founding a house. And a mercenary lance would be win with me simply cause I'm a battletech fan

So the knight who's in charge of things sets off to become a freeblade, him and his sacristans (represented by admech), and as he goes along offering help to other houses and imperial forces, more knights join. Whether because of want for glory or valor, or because they have a vendetta to settle or something of that sort.

Like a band of ronin samurai or the magnificent 7. Very cool and in no way lore breaking.

Sounds good me - lots of story opportunities for rivalry, friendship and if we are going down the BattleTech route properly some romance - plus that's also very knightly....

Definitely like the idea of rivalries and the Magnificent 7.

Make your imperial knight pilot a female. Queen something something. Or Baroness something something. That would make it interesting.
