Hi guys I'm back in the hobby after years out and am really enjoying painting again but in a few months I'd like to start playing 40k again. The last time I went to a tournament though I arrived with my well rounded and decently painted force I ended up playing a guy with the cheesiest army of all time and had done the bare minimum painting to get into the tournament, he went about annihilating me and loving it. This was the last game I played and really put me off 40k at the time.

Basically are there any friendly style tournaments or events known where I could attend and play for fun? Or do I just take a chance with standard tournaments and hope to get lucky

You and I are in the same boat, I am also not a huge fan of ultra-competitive play and have also been put off tournaments for this reason.

Having said that I think you will get "that guy" even at non-competitive events (it's the nature of the game we play sadly) but obviously in a tournament setting this is probably the norm (and in their defence I guess that's what they came for).

The GW events at Warhammer World are actually really good but it isn't easy to get tickets for them and are obviously exclusively based in Nottingham.

Otherwise, I guess it depends on where you are based?

In London, the HATE (Hackney Area Tabletop Enthusiasts) Club occasionally put on events and they are definitely worth keeping an eye out for. Hatecon1 was the most fun I've had playing 40K and I got to meet loads of new players with beautifully painted armies.

The Spikey Club (based in Reading) used to host events, not sure if they still do, and The Overlords run events throughout the year which are meant to be very good.

Vanguard in Bristol is also meant to loads of fun.

Whereabouts in London are you based? No particulars please as web, just a general “Lewisham” or “Peckham” or similar will do.

May be able to put you in touch with some players

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I'd say just join a bunch of local Wargames Facebook groups and browse through their events for any local/regional tournaments, those kind of tournaments are usually much more relaxed and a lot cheaper.

In my view you had bad luck with your first round pairing at the tournament you attended and should try again.

Yes, you can get brutal lists but the rule of 3 is helping and these type of "I am trying to win the whole thing" players usually find each other pretty fast.

I've only played 4 tournaments and not done brilliantly but had great fun in all of them... most of the time if you aren't winning that much then you end up in the 2nd half of the field, where everyone is bringing armies like yours.

What I would like to see is more things like the SN Battle Reports "No Retreat" tournaments where the army construction is locked down, painting requirements are strict and terrain is beautiful.

(No Retreat is in Gibraltar, by the way... and you have to apply to get in with your list and photos of your army!)

Sorry - the other poster had South East London, so was replying to them directly.

Get on the networks for clubs. Tournaments just aren’t for casual gaming really.

Apparently there’s a club in St Edmunds - make contact with them

Ah sorry, didn't realise you were asking me, I'm New Cross so sounds like we're both local, lol.

I mostly game in Hackney though at HATE.

Out of my Mind

If it’s any consolation, the same problem exists on this side of the pond.

Everyone has adopted / accepted the ITC format as standard and it’s extremely difficult to find an event that plays 40k. Even in a casual setting you’ll find players using or referencing it, which makes it even more difficult to find a game that is any fun to play. They’ll even spectate on games they’re not playing in, or offer tips that make no sense outside of the format. Extremely frustrating.

Check out the Norwich Last Stand club and their conflict events. They attract a real good mix and give out a huge prize pool across the field. The player who finishes in the middle (the ‘no-mans land’ award) gets the same prize as the player who finishes first (usually a 90 quid box set).

We also have the best looking tournament tables in the UK. Every table is packed with themed terrain and looks gorgeous.

If you live in Bury it’s real convenient - however tickets sell real quick.
