Hey, I just got into Warhammer this year and I've decided to make Space Marines my first army, but I'm on a real tight budget and mostly just love to make the models themselves, but want to eventually play a few games. I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this, but should I go the classic Space Marines or the new Primaris ones? Both look cool and have their own strengths, but I'm not totally sure which to spend my money on. I'm mostly just afraid GW will get rid of the classic ones all together and I'm stuck with an outdated army.

Greetings, and welcome to Dakka!

I think that at the moment, although a pure primaris army is viable, it's quite limited in what it can do. Legacy marines have more options, so that the two are designed to work side-by-side rather than for the primaris to replace the old ones (although that may happen in the future - we just don't know).
I think it's unlikely that legacy or classic marines will get rolled up in the near future, but at the same time they won't get any new sculpts or new units either. However, you've got access to a very, very broad range if you go classic, whereas primaris are severely lacking in variety I find.

If you're on a tight budget, I recommend getting some classic marines on ebay, second-hand if needs be, which should allow you to build up a force without breaking the bank.

Do you know what your sin is, Malcolm Reynolds?
Ah hell, I'm a fan of all seven.
But right now, I'm gonna have to go with wrath.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hello! I'm in the same situation as you at the moment. I had the Dark Imperium box to start with. I was told to sell whichever army I didnt use and use the money on stuff for my main army. Dark Imperium comes with Death Guard and Primaris Space Marines; I chose Primaris.

Upon asking a friend of mine, he said that it was best to expand using the classic marines as cannon fodder and have the Primaris guys to support them. The reason for this was just the fact that Primaris guys dont have many options. They can't fit in the standard classic marine transports and tanks and only have 2 options for transport, one of which wasn't even designed for Primaris in the first place (not to mention probably expensive.)

Hello, and welcome!

My perspective on the subject is that Primaris Marines are excessively boring. You have hardly any options, very little poseability, and the kit-bashing options are practically non-existent. Whereas, with the Secundus Marines, you have an enormous host of plastic figures to choose from, dripping with options and bits to make them truly your own. Look at the options that a Tactical Marine squad has, and compare that to an Intercessor squad. Worse yet, compare Devastators to Hellblasters.

Also, I detest the scale creep that Primaris Marines (and most of GW's newer releases) represent.

I started a whole new army just as an excuse to do Primaris.

Their main weaknesses have been said above - less posing options, few weapon choices (although definitely present, I've converted and kitbashed my own power sword sergeants, Leiutenants and Primaris Apothecaries), however, they are so much more fun to paint, the larger size looks really good against human sized enemies, and the poses, whilst quite static, are pretty good looking, and have enough variation that they don't all look the same.

Again, they lack a lot of versatility that normal Marines offer, and they lack transports - however, you can probably get away with converting/using normal SM units in a Primaris force - ie, a Predator would still fit in a Primaris army, you can try and convert Bikes to have a Primaris rider, and most multi-wound models can represent a Primaris'd equivalent.
(Yeah, this Primaris sized Captain here is armed with a thunder hammer and plasma pistol, so he's using the normal Captain statline with a Primaris model")
