I was all excited for the new Age of Sigmar, then some life events happened, and my depression came back. I am trying to fight my depression and so I got out my minis and started painting again. I have a bit you can say of unpainted minis. Sadly I lost my job so I can't buy nothing right now. Once I start working again and bills are all caught up, I plan on buying the new box set. I am hoping it's not a limited edition and I will not have to worry about buying it.

I might be able to afford the General's Handbook 2018. So besides, that, I believe the rules are going to be free online. Please correct me if I am wrong or not there. I haven't really been paying attention from AoS2.0 because it was a bit upsetting that I can't buy none of the lovely new minis come out.

So instead of dwelling what I can't buy, I need to start seeing what I do have and enjoy what I haven't put together yet. So besides the GH2018, is there really anything I need to buy to get started with playing AoS2.0? I like to get playing again and instead of being sad I can't start a new army, I am going to try and finish the armies I do have. I can finally finish my Beastclaw riders and fix what broke. I also have the Start Collecting Greenskinz. Hopefully I can find the minis that I tried to start on. And I have the Stormcasts from the first starter set and Blightwar.

So without spending any money can I still play AoS2.0 or should I just pack my stuff up for now and get it later once I can start buying stuff again.

Gathering the Informations.

Why would you think the boxed set is a limited edition?

Anyways:
General's Handbook 2018 for points values.
You can buy the Core Book by itself for $60 if you really want it without the models.

You will be able to play it without spending money but it's going to be awkward getting games since people are whiny manbabies about playing games with no point values.

They've said the "Core Rules" will be free online, as will all of the Warscrolls. If they also maintain the Warscroll Builder, you can figure point costs from there (and I see no reason why they'd not update that).

What parts of the big core rulebook, other than fluff obviously, will be "missing" are yet to be known. Definitely the Malign Sorcery stuff will not be free, and the allegiance abilities and so on in the GHB won't be either.

We'll probably start seeing more info this week as lots of the internet celebs should be out of NDA on preorder date or thereabouts (which is Saturday), but the above info is what I've gathered from Warhammer Community articles and the Stormcast podcast. So I may have missed some things, too.

From what I understand the grand alliance allegiance abilities will be in the free core rules, it is why they will 16 pages now instead of 4.
Points will be on warscroll builder which is free.
The big things you will be missing by not buying the books is battleplans, and rules for various different ways of playing, like multiplayer battles, large scale battles etc.
So if you want to play basic kill the other side aos with a grand alliance army you just need the minis and the free rules. If you want access to battleplans and some other stuff, you need some of the other books.
So you can absolutely play aos 2 without spending a single extra penny. If you choose a mixed destruction army you can use the free allegiance abilities and artefacts. GW has already posted some of battleplans online or you can just ask your opponent to choose a battleplan.

I'd throw my vote for the BRB + GHB (if you want points etc). GW has announced that they've made a big shift in the layout of the new book and it will be nothing like the old campaign ones. You'll definitely want it.

In case you missed it in other threads, the core rules are available on ageofsigmar.com now.

Thank you for that. I see it now. So it's the General's Handbook for me. I will pick up the boxset one day so will not get the Core book. So I feel better now, I can still play and it will not cost me a lot.

I've already read the rules. There is not much difference to the aos 1. I can see CP's now.
How about the warscrolls?
