A game of furious action where players co-operate under a time limit to defeat Tai Lung & other villains from the Kung Fu Panda movies

Modiphius Entertainment are creating an awesome co-operative board game where you get to play as one of the Furious Five or Dragon Warrior Po. Explore the game's different challenges as you come up against Ox Grunts, Wolf Slashers & Spearmen, and the Wolf Boss as well as Tai Lung himself.

Each of the heroes has a character card with a number of health points (hearts) and a special power. In the case of Po if he rolls a Chi symbol, he can use it to heal wounds.

The game uses the Furious Action Dice which show various faces: a Kick, a Punch, two Moves, a Chi and a Claw. Players frantically roll four dice to get different combos to move around the board, attack enemies, and complete exciting objectives. The game features a unique mechanic, if you roll Claws on the dice, you move around the Dial of Destiny triggering enemies to spawn and attack!

We had a great review from Kung Fu legend and Youtube reviewer, Rahdo Runs Through It at UK Games Expo!

We've created the Furious Five and the various enemies as PVC plastic figures.

Just to note, the minis are 100% prototypes/3d prints. So, final versions will not have the print stepping and be somewhat nicer than these (we primed these grey and gave them a coat of black ink to test the idea of the final look, which has the unfortunate side effect of making the print line rather more prominent).

They will of course be board game quality, not our resin that we are using for Fallout/Trek, but still, we have been getting good results on the Fallout PVC and I got to handle the first run of Siege of the Citadel models this week from the same manufacturer and they are good quality board game pieces for sure.

This isn't a hobby/war game (obviously) but the final minis will be more polished than what you see here.

I'm not remotely involved in this game, but I've seen the dev team playing and refining it over the last year, and the guys have put a lot of love into it. So, can't give you any more info other than it looks like a fun family friendly game with lots of action from all the play throughs I've watched.

Any idea when I’ll get the Conan RPG tiles for the Monolith crossover that I paid for years ago?

I start to worry when I’m still waiting on stuff and the company is launching several product lines in the meantime.

The tiles have been out for quite some time, at least 8-9 months for the public and backers for maybe a year.

If you're still waiting on the monolith crossover book that's been their big priority for the past 2 months as delays from Monolith's end have caused issues. Right now it looks like it's being edited before being sent back to Monolith for another round of approvals.

I mean, sure, they're probably a "Kickstarter Company", but this feels like a bit of a stretch for them.

But maybe this one didn't take up many resources - or, maybe it won't take up many resources?

I think Modiphius is mostly a design company that outsources production, in which case it makes sense that they would be working on a lot of projects at once.

Kickstarters? Just 3 RPG lines (Conan, infinity, John Carter). Conan is maybe 1/3rd done, Infinity has only delivered a core book and adventure set despite being the first of those three to fund (most of this is on the license holder) and John Carter only just funded.

Their last boardgame, thunderbirds, that was kickstarted delivered quite a while ago.

Fallout and Startrek aren't kickstarters but just traditional releases.

They seam to have 2 different design teams. One for RPGs one for Miniatures and Boardgames. Their RPG group has their hands more then full and I wouldn't back one of those from them until they finish out others, but a lot of the miniatures are sculpted for all the lines (including John Carter which had a lot) and so that group probably doesn't have much else to do while production is happening.

Eh. Fallout sure felt like it should have been a Kickstarter, and the delays and constant push back on the release dates are very Kickstarter-eque. Sure, it wasn't a KS, but they took people's money last year as a pre-order and missed their ship date and revised ship date, so it is playing out very much like an actual Kickstarter.

It doesn't help that Kickstarter and pre-orders are now blurred by companies like CMON and Modiphius, either.

Really, Modiphius should actually fulfill prior projects before taking on new projects/licenses.

Get in touch with Lloyd in support if you haven't received something. Tiles have been available for a while now, so either something else is holding up your order or else you have somehow fallen through cracks, so we need to identify the issue. support@modiphius.com is your way forward there.

KFP is basically written and in layout, and the last of the tiles is being painted now. So, its had the bulk of the resources it needs to be ready to go already done. As such, baring tragedy at the manufacturing stage, this should be a rapid turn around KS. In terms of us being a KS company, it depends on the line and the project. For example, as the head of the Wargames team (which is our newest team and very much in development), we have one existing game (AC Skirmish) that is being worked on for a new wave in a few months, that will not be kickstarted, One imminent game (Fallout) which is very much done for all of wave 1, we are just waiting on the boat to arrive and product to ship to pre-order customers before we go out to retail and one big project that is kicking off internally (which is... I cannot say) that will again be a pre-order/non kickstarter project.

We have learned a lot from Wave 1 of Fallout and these lessons will be applied for future waves and our next project, to avoid as much of the (justified) frustrations of the delays in you folks getting your game. From an internal POV, its just as frustrating, as sculpts are done, the game is written and the development complete, so there is nothing we can do to get you the game any faster. We brought the core boxes to UK Games Expo to show people the genuine production sets that will be in your hands as soon as possible to reassure folks this isn't all smoke and mirrors, but the time frame around production went longer than we had hoped. Feedback on the game and the minis has been great, so it will be worth the wait, but I fully understand why people are frustrated. As I say, lessons learned and the future will reflect this so that we can turn projects around faster.

See above for Fallout, as for Trek, The OS Bridge Crew is out, and I'm pretty sure Sam (head of RPGs and all round Trek fan) has some very tasty kits lined up for you. We have put wave 2 out including the borg and TNG generic away team (and it even shipped slightly earlier than announces so sometimes we do beat our deadlines) and there is plenty more coming.

Correct, and as much as possible we will err on the side of not kick starting a project, unless it justifies it. We are a small but growing company, so of course we don't have funds ready to do every last project planned without crowd funding, but we are settling in to our groove and as we move forward I hope we will lean on KS less and less. Of course, I am not the boss, but he is a great guy and very much aware of what's on folks minds. The other thing to consider is time frames, its my 1 year anniversary with the company in two weeks time, and nothing I have worked on in this year is quite ready to ship, to give an idea of the time frames we are working with. So, internal changes might not be visible immediately, as we work on projects 1-3 years before you see them sometimes.

We essentially have three creative departments now, the RPG team (lead by Sam) the Board Game team (lead by Rob) and the Wargame team (lead by me). Supporting each team is a shared pool of sculptors, layout guys and our playtest/dev crew. So, as a project wraps up for production, these resources are then moved to another project, rather than have them sit around doing nothing. Fallout is a good example, the Wargame team is now working on the future waves, along side AC minis content, so the dev crew move in to the next project, which might be a board game or an RPG (I can't tell you what they are), meanwhile everything is in manufacturing, so our end is as done as can be.

So from an external POV, it looks like we are not working on the project you are waiting on, but the truth is we may have already wrapped that bit up. As someone noted, we don't have in house manufacturing, so that side of things is somewhat at the mercy of the gods.

I'm as much a gamer as you guys, and I am currently sat waiting on two outstanding KS that are very late, so I sympathise with frustrations. So, I'm more than happy to answer questions, and I am on your side. Hope that helps and if you have anything else, fire it my way and I will find the person in the office who can answer the question.

Fallout will be with you soon, the dev team have been thrashing out Siege for as long as I have been here, and KFP is in the final stages of development, so a little more patience and this will pass. And hopefully the next secret project(s) will be in your eager mitts that much sooner.

All good points and I made a point of letting the Siege of the Citadel backers know we had the Kung Fu Panda game coming as I could imagine with delays they might see another KS as rightly frustrating. A couple of years back we decided to focus efforts on getting Siege Kickstarted first instead of the planned Kung Fu Panda kickstarter. With the change in ownership of Dreamworks over to Universal and delays in approvals we decided it made more sense to let Siege go first and take our time getting everything approved with KFP. Of course we didn't count on extra delays getting Siege finished and whilst we continued to get approvals we didn't push as hard as we might since I wanted to wait until Siege was at least shipping. So we got to a point where we couldn't wait any longer if we wanted to get the game out within our contract. To be fair KFP is an even better game for all the waiting so sometimes there's a silver lining to these delays.

We've been fortunate to be able to move away from Kickstarter for some projects - Star Trek was a relatively short pre-order compared to our big RPG projects on Kickstarter and John Carter of Mars will also be relatively short too thanks to the advanced preparation. We're now in a position where we can sink more resources in to getting games ready prior to pre-order to reduce the delays. Another thing we're doing is for example with the John Carter Kickstarter, everyone has to have the Wave 1 shipment regardless so they're not waiting on a later shipment whilst it turns up in retail.

As a company we are growing quickly and adding new staff to help us cope with the wide number of projects - on top of a head office staff of around 16 people (plus another 8 out of the office) we have over 100 freelancers outside the business now working across different games - Conan has it's own line managers, writers, edits, artists, art director, layout, proof readers and so on so they're an example of how we manage to produce lots of projects at the same time, Infinity has it's own team and so on. What you cant do is say to someone sorry you're job is over because these other projects are just so late so we have to wait to develop the product. Part of my job is in making sure different areas of the business have the resources they need to get the job done without impacting each other - need more graphic design time? Okay let's find another freelance designer - need this product playtested quicker - okay let's get another playtester in - and of course how we pay for all of that.

It's not perfect, with so many people involved, real life will often intrude despite our best efforts to live in a world of warp drive, swords and sorcery or post apocalyptic mayhem. When someone's ill or their life crashes others have to step in and help cover or we have to delay the development. Everything can sail through approvals with a big licensor, then suddenly you hit a block, they're away, they just don't like one thing and it's really important to them, or any of a hundred other reasons. We try to keep people informed where possible, I try to not give too detailed timelines now until we're confident enough to know it will actually happen. Thankfully I know regardless of delays the product will be really great when you actually get it, and delivering amazing value and quality is something we work hard to do, even if it means frustrating delays. Hopefully as time goes on we'll get better at reducing the chances of those delays happening though and we'll keep growing this truly awesome team who are getting better at making beautiful games

And creating a backlash of angry customers who already handed over interest free loans in the form of KS pledges or pre-orders only to see the company going back to ask for more interest free loans for other projects is a productive way to operate? No, clearly it isn't.

If people need reassurance that Modiphius' games aren't vaporware, that isn't a good look for the company.

Hopefully this is just growing pains for you guys, but the issue, at least for me, isn't that your internal resources are fluidly working on projects as they come, it is the constant fundraising while previous projects are still on hold. Perhaps the internal resources are too much and have grown too fast? If you have to keep fundraising because you aren't selling items because you need to pay for the development of new items you want to sell later, it just looks bad from an external POV (to use your terminology). It doesn't look like the company has its legs solidly under it, and makes someone like me hesitant to trust the company with a loan. Maybe it is a wrong headed view point, but with each new announcement of a licensed game being developed by you guys I keep thinking, "Jeez, slow down and sort out what you already have on your plate!"

The issue you have is there's a set team working on say Infinity, or Conan, they're well under production and throwing loads more resources at projects like this won't speed them up - in Infinity's case Corvus Bellis can only approve so much content at a time, in the case of Conan, all the books are mostly written and it's simply line manager time to review the content to ensure it's consistent and on brand, and then licensor approval time, again they're working as fast as they can.

Same again with Fallout - everythings in production, shipping from China, and nothing we can do will speed up delivery. There are logistics problem solving to reduce further delays. You get to a point with projects where you simply cannot speed it up. We have thrown resources at Siege and seen a lightning fast turnaround on the final stage which is great - but again in a month's time we'll likely be at the point it's down to layout, approvals and production. So when you get to these points you can't have the rest of the company sitting around twiddling their thumbs.

Scheduling ahead we'd like to be in a position of having less new projects outstanding for too long - which is why John Carter is turning around quicker, and Star Trek pre-orders are pretty short affairs so you can see the results already. In an ideal world we'll gradually move to a model where only crazy big things like a Borg Cube or massive collectors edition would be kickstarted or pre-ordered - the kind of thing you can't really sell in retail. Trouble is retail is under immense pressure with over 50 new products launched each week. It's very hard to establish enough demand with distributors to know how much you really need to produce without a pre-order (and they take part in very few of these unless they're big names). It's all a balance - a tricky one but considering 4 years ago we relied on Kickstarter revenue and now today have a very healthy business selling stock of product to distributors and customers it's a big chance. Amazing when you look back to see how it's changed.

Fallout is a good example, the Wargame team is now working on the future waves, along side AC minis content, so the dev crew move in to the next project, which might be a board game or an RPG (I can't tell you what they are), meanwhile everything is in manufacturing, so our end is as done as can be.

So from an external POV, it looks like we are not working on the project you are waiting on, but the truth is we may have already wrapped that bit up. As someone noted, we don't have in house manufacturing, so that side of things is somewhat at the mercy of the gods.


Hopefully this is just growing pains for you guys, but the issue, at least for me, isn't that your internal resources are fluidly working on projects as they come, it is the constant fundraising while previous projects are still on hold. Perhaps the internal resources are too much and have grown too fast? If you have to keep fundraising because you aren't selling items because you need to pay for the development of new items you want to sell later, it just looks bad from an external POV (to use your terminology). It doesn't look like the company has its legs solidly under it, and makes someone like me hesitant to trust the company with a loan. Maybe it is a wrong headed view point, but with each new announcement of a licensed game being developed by you guys I keep thinking, "Jeez, slow down and sort out what you already have on your plate!"


If you don't like the kickstarter model, don't use it.

It's pretty illogical to pledge on the platform and then expect a company to grind to a halt on anything else until it's delivered.

If it was a situation where individual people are working on things rather than deliver a kickstarter - so sculptors sculpting new things while kickstarter items are not sculpted - then that's different. But it's obviously not the case.
