Hello
I usually do the yellow like this. White basecoat -> two layers of yriel yellow -> wash with agrax earthshade -> layers of yriel yellow + highlights. But there is a problem, whenever I already have 4th thin layer of yriel yellow, it still does not cover all the agrax earthshade and is getting quite thick. There are still some dark/greenish areas. Do you have any tips for covering the agrax with yriel yellow ? Now I am thinking about using an alternative. Reikland fleshshade. Do you have any experience with this shade ? Does it fit well with yellow ? It should be easier to cover.

Absolutely. You could go for seraphim sepia, or reikland fleshshade, both would work fine. If you find that the yellow gets too thick after so many coats, either thin even more or just paint the washes into the recesses where you want a darker colour. this will make it so the block yellow is not darkened and you only need another few thin thin coats.
Hope this helps

This is one of the issues with painting yellow, in trying to shade the recesses if you get it on yellow parts it’s a nightmare to clean up.
I recently found and tried a tutorial by Mengel Miniatures for painting yellow. It was pretty quick and very effective.

http://www.mengelminiatures.com/2017/07/tutorial-classic-imperial-fists.html

Basic steps,
Base coat in Bone
Agrax shade in recesses only
Tidy up overspill with bone
Highlight white
All over wash with Lamenters Yellow glaze
Re highlight white
Wash again with Lamenters
Final highlight white

Sounds more involved than it is, but I’d highly recommend it.
Check out the tutorial for a fuller description with pics.

Yeah... I was thinking about getting some seraphim sephia, but I want to try the reikland shade. I dont kow how it gets that thick ( for example shoulder pads in attached picture), I thin it down with few drops from lahmian medium (2 parts of paint : 1 part of medium). I know about the recess part, but its a long run. Hmmm... If I would be patient... this could work really well.

I dont really like the lamenters glaze part.... You could mess something up and you will hardly clean that up with a glaze.

But this got me thinking... Agrax earthshade in deep recesses and reikland for helm, shoulder pads and so on ?

Yellow pigment is very transparent so sadly there is nothing you can do to make it cover better.

The best option is to not do a all over wash and only wash where you need it.

There is also the possibility to repaint some areas with a opaque white mixed with yellow pigment however it would get a pastel look so you have to do one final layer with yellow again.

In your case if its already thick I am not sure I would recommend it as it would get even thicker. But it would get an even color atleast.

And the worst part is.... I know I want to go for reikland fleshshade, but agrax earthshade is.....looks really well, but it sure is harder to clean, than reikland. Which one does fit more to yellow.... agrax or reikland.... I cant decide....

You can also try to thin down your ink wash so that it's not so overbearing.

Got my squad painted with Duncan's drybrushing, but it looks too orange....+ I personally like brighter yellow.

Averland Sunset spray, thin gloss varnish and work from that

OR

Put your chosen yellow tone through an Airbrush, ideally with a light brown for your recesses, then again thin coat of gloss varnish.

The gloss varnish lets you use a SMALL amount of airbrush cleaner on a brush to tidy up mistakes whilst leaving your base colour intact.

You'll also find that your paints, washes and glazes behave differently over a gloss varnish. They will tend to "pull into themselves" or "contract" making it less likely that you have mistakes to correct in the first place.

Interesting. But unfortunately I cannot get an airbrush anytime soon. With the varnish part. It is a good idea, but on some places I like to do some mess, because by my opinion it looks better. :-D So I dont think I will use it.

Thanks for the advices. Here is one I washed today with reikland fleshshade.

Looks good!

Now the hard part is to not mess up the smooth yellow when painting the other colors as its very hard to correct it again.

Imperial fist is one of the coolest color scheme to me but its very punishing to paint!
