Say the new Codex drops next month and it is just the Dog's Breakfast, utterly unplayable. Would anyone be ticked if I played my Space Wolves models using vanilla Space Marines rules? Obviously I wouldn't be able to play Thunderwolf Cavalry or anything, but the rest of them?

No one would care, though honestly...there is zero percent chance that Space Wolves is not power-creeped into the most powerful marine codex yet, and even in a terrible iteration would be stronger than the basic Marine codex which is pretty mediocre.

Don't worry, you'll have awful silly wolfy mcwolfems aplenty.

This is the kind of thing where some people won’t care at all and some people might be mildly annoyed. Like painting your army Ultramarines but running Lias Issodon and Raptors tactics.

Outside of Grey Knights, has any Marines codex this edition been a "complete dogs breakfest"? by and large 8th edition is IMHO one of the better editions it seems for "marine balance"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

I mean you can...but why would you hamper yourself like that?

From a rules standpoint you're perfectly able to use SW models to represent SM datasheets. You can use Gretchin as Tactical Marines for all the rules actually care.

How easy this'll be really depends on what you're running. If you're running say... 1 wolf lord, 1 wolf guard battle leader, 3 5 man grey hunter squads with a combi-Plas and Plasma gun. back stopped by ascan razoerbacks, you're running something that just about any marine codex could run, if you're running bjorn with blood claws backed up with Wulfen.. obviously you're gonna struggle to run them as anything but space wolves

Counts-As is a remarkably powerful thing. Bjorn is a counts-as Chaplain Dreadnought, Blood Claws are counts-as Assault Marines and the Wulfen can be counts-as Vanguard Veterans or Assault Terminators if you're willing to push the envelope a little.
