Just started playing 8th Edition after being away since 4th. Is anyone else bugged by the names of battalion and brigade detachments? Seems to me battalion detachments are about company sized and brigade detachments are about battalion sized.
I don’t know, maybe I’m off base, just kinda irked me lol.

Does it bother me? No.

Are you right? Pretty much.

Keep in mind we also play games where our "armies" are basically platoons - a company at most, and even small platoons are oddly led by vaunted heroes of the galaxy. As if they have nothing better to do.

Yeah, kind of.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

My understanding is that we are playing a "snapshot" of a much greater battle. Sort of like Pickett's Charge in the Battle of Gettysburg or Arnhem in Market Garden (a bridge too far). A snap shot of a pivotal moment in a much larger battle or campaign. When considered like this, it makes a bit more sense to see these vaunted heroes meet on the battlefield- or even seek each other out- ala Ghazghull and Dante / Yarrick- one looking to cut the head off an Orc Waaaagh and the other looking for a good fight. Or an Eldar Autarch hunting down a Genestealer Broodlord. The game makes a lot more sense when you think about it this way in the context of the 40K universe, and leads to less silly things like Magnus the Red being involved in a scouting expedition and skirmish on some back water moon.

Or a movie, where you only have so much budget for extras.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Still better than "regiments" in the war of the ring-game, which consisted of 8 models. THAT bothered me

What really annoys me though are "spearhead" "Vanguard" and "outrider", as I always mix them up. They really should have called them "fast attack detachment" "heavy support detachment" and so on. But GW likes their fluffy names.

As a non-Marine player, it doesn't bother me one bit.
Xenos armies are unorthodox by their very nature, so it doesn't matter what the detachment is called, cuz it doesn't reflect the Xenos anyway.

Also, aside from Guard, hardly any player "fills up" the detachment anyway.
Most "Battalions" could almost fit into a Patrol detachment and are only in a Battalion to max out CPs.

Agreed, it would have been nice if they just called those 3 by their Battlefield role name, as well as calling the Command and Super Heavy "HQ" and "LoW" detachments

FFG makes a game called Legion with roughly 25ish guys on the board. How do you feel about that?
