I recently picked up a new morning routine. Every morning at 6am I walk down the street to the local audience and get breakfast. I see pretty much the same people every morning at the same time. My Grandpa even pops up here and there, mostly every Sunday. That really got me thinking, the older you get the more routines you pick up. So what are some of DakkaDakkas favorite routines?

I tend to always park in the same general area at various locations around town so that I can easily find my car again.

I don't have a routine. That's how they get you!

Every morning, I start the day with a cup o' Joe, then another. Then I have food.

Then I do other stuff. I don't really have a "routine" - I start with the jobs that need to be done, then do other stuff to pad out the time before the next lot of "needs to be done" stuff.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I'm fortunate in that I'm not particularly fond of routine, and my job is not usually routine. I have a group of tasks that I perform, but often take on new duties and responsibilities (such as developing new products and systems for the company to sell) so that each day is a different mix of familiar tasks. I might be taking orders, placing orders, providing tech support, learning about wifi technicalities related to transferrIng video clips, installing a scale system, sweeping the floor, selling our camera system to a guy in Germany, arranging said shipment, learning about German address norms (different from North American norms!), priming and painting a cross-tube... every day is different depending on that day's requirements.

I love it. I have tried many different types of "normal" work and I'm not cut out for it. Give me something a little different every day and I'm a happy camper.

My only routine apart from the hygene stuff is making a big mug of tea for my travel beaker. Can't face the day without some tea in me.

Wake up before the alarm at 6:45. When the alarm goes off the cat jumps off the bed and waits for me to get dressed and feed him breakfast.

Feed the cat, and the Koi then eat breakfast. Clean teeth, wash face and put on the tie that my other half picks for me, grab the lunch she's made for me, then drive to work listening which ever podcast downloaded from subscriptions for the day.

Get to work at 8:00 check the backups have all gone through. Then just generally do whatever needs doing.

Finish work at 16:30, lock up the office and turn the light out and drive home, finish my podcast.

At 17:15 I get home, am greeted by the cat at the front door, I go in and disarm the alarm. Then I feed the cat, then the Koi.

I then empty the dishwasher and prepare dinner for my GF for when she gets home. After dinner we watch tv or play games.

At 21:00 we go upstairs, shower and then go to bed, we read for an hour, in that time the cat will show up and curl up at the end of the bed, then we all fall asleep.

Thats my rock and roll weekday routine

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Bed at 23:30, up at 6:30. Every day.

Other than that, depends on what particular hat I'm wearing that day

Some days I'm translating at home (German to English), mainly financials, accounting and some technical stuff. Mostly longer-term projects.
Don't really have a routine then, as I basically just stay at the desk and work until that day's allocation is done.

Other days I'm getting a sweat on at various job sites (all legit with CSCS card + tickets). Routine there depends on the foreman.

May seem like a strange combo, but I find it a pretty good balance between intellectually and physically challenging.
Funny thing is that other translators I collaborate with don't believe I do construction labouring, while the blokes I job with don't believe I translate ... until I yell at them in German

Fair bit of time off...

Hah, that is so close to my own routine it is scary.
Subtract the cats, and move the bed time to 22.45 and it is exactly right. I do not sleep enough.

likewise, I've taken to parking near some kind of landmark (pay meter, tree, lamp-post etc) although multi-storys are a sod if the top is full

I really like having routines, but unfortunately I'm very bad at keeping to them. I'm easily distracted plus I tend to be a "go with the flow" type of person, so any little change tends to shatter my routine and I'm unlikely to pick it back up.

There you go! Tips for a successful life.

So all you need now is to get a cat and to go to bed early and you're sorted ! I recommend a Turkish Van for a cat

My days aren't exactly designed to accept routines. As a small business owner I work the shifts that I can't hire anyone else to fill. One day I may close up shop at 10pm. The next day I might be there at 4:30am.

That being said, when I am at work, my routines are so down that I sometimes find that I have "missing time". I'll be day dreaming, usually about Warhammer stuff, and the next moment it's 45 minutes later and work that I swore I didn't do is perfectly done, and I have little to no memory of doing it.

Over the years a couple people and I have gotten so engrained into these habits that we can literally not talk to each other for an hour or more, then continue with a previous discussion like it never stopped, all while not needing to talk to each other about who is doing what.

Sounds like a nightmare! Although I too find myself having done work and forgetting about it, but it tends to be the same kind of things I do on a regular basis so I guess forgetting repetitive work makes sense

An experienced and well-trained team of people can do this as a matter of routine. Everyone knows what needs to be done next, so they just move from one task to the next without needing to discuss it.

A good manager wants this sort of team. It makes their day SO much easier. Bad managers hate them, because it gives them no excuse to boss people around and so they have to work to make excuses.

This, so much this. My older employees move a little slower, but each and every move they make is with purpose. Having someone move 10% faster, that also makes 10% more mistakes is actually worse in the long run, as finding the mistake and fixing it throws a wrench into what everyone else needs to do.

This Is Where the Fish Lives

During the week, I try to be in bed by 10:00 because I'm up at 4:30 so I can be at work at 5:45 (I start at 6:00).

I shower and typically have breakfast at home (every once and a while I'll stop to get something on the way in to work though). I get to work, open my computer to check on my building, then I go get my first cup of coffee. After that, I swing by the NOC check in with my on-duty tech and drink my coffee. The rest of the day starts from there.

On the weekends, I'm up by 6:00, well before my wife (who has narcolepsy) and kids. The first thing I do is head to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and then I head down to the basement to work on some models or play computer games in peace and quiet. I usually wait until everyone is up in the house before having breakfast.

It depends on fact is it training day or not.
If it is I wake up at 4:50 AM, some coffee and at 6 I am ready to run for 45 minutes and do some exercise and stretching up to 7:20. Then I go to shower and start work up to 4 PM. Then I go play eso hard, eat and sleep I am enjoying eso very haid as I said any this is why sometimes I buy ESO Gold because I always want to have the best ESO items, gear etc.
