Greetings,

Just a topic I was thinking about today, with a simple question for you. What is the most recent ruleset you have....

1. Purchased
2. Played
3. Enjoyed

Feel free to expand as much or as little as you like. I will see how this thread evolves and add on some thoughts later.

1. Last Days and Kobolds & Cobblestones are the most recent purchases, which should be arriving today.

2. Gaslands. Last night. 3 player Death Race with only 2 of 7 cars surviving at the end.

3. Gaslands. Really is a super fun game, and makes for a nice break between the "lifestyle" games such as AOS or 40k.

1. By Fire and Sword Players Edition. This is mostly an updated and transportable version of the old giant BFaS rulebook rather than a new edition.

2 & 3. L'Art de la Guerre. A historical ancient and medieval ruleset. It's lots of fun. I played Romans vs Gauls last week and this week I'm playing Carthaginians vs Romans.

1. I have Deadzone 2nd edition coming today, but have a preorder in for Age of Sigmar: Soul Wars which is coming later - but was bought first.

2 & 3. Shadespire was the last miniature game I played, and I enjoyed it greatly. If Shadespire doesn't count (it's more of a board game), then I guess Walking Dead: All Out War (which I also enjoyed).

Honestly, not sure that Played/Enjoyed is two separate categories most of the time. There's only one ruleset that I actively dislike, and I don't play it anymore.

1. Gas lands, Horizon Wars, Age of Sigmar, Gates of Antares
2. Tales of Equestria (last Sunday), Magic The Gathering (on Friday, previously the last time I played was about 1995), Rune Wars (about 3 months ago), 40K 8E (about 6 months ago)
3. See #2

I tend to collect models and rulesets, but don’t play very often. I’ve got a metric ton of systems and models for those systems, but no one I feel comfortable playing against - save my brother and son.

Side note: Ever since MtG had “killed” D&D, I hated the game (MtG). Only in the last few months, when my eldest son picked it up did I give it a second look. The latest set, Battlebond - which is team play, got me interested enough to buy a booster box.

It never ends well

1. The Red Book of the Elf King, which should hopefully be arriving tomorrow.
2. DBA 3.0, and you can find the game down in the Pre-WW1 section of the forums.
3. See #2. DBA is a simple ruleset with straightforward rules, if you can get past the way they're written. It's probably one of those games that's best played with someone experience before reading the rules.

1. The two latest in the Osprey Wargaming Series: Outremer and Kobolds and Copplestones
2. Super Systems 4th edition
3. I enjoyed Super Systems and look forward to playing again. The most recent game I can think of that I played and did not really enjoy was Warhammer 40K 8th edition. Too much waiting around.

1. SAGA 2
2. SAGA 2
3. SAGA 2

Started off with Anglo Danes, I was not convinced with them in the first game, thought they were great in the second and third game basically because I misunderstood a special ability.
4th game I felt disillusioned with them because my old trick did not work anymore and put my moany hat on, 5th game found a new trick which I got better at using with subsequent games. I started to feel quite comfortable with the Anglo Danes so I decided to try out my SAGA 1 OG army: Normans. So far I am not convinced...,.

1. AvP Unleashed. My group are getting into it and I love the idea of a Colonial Marine army, so I'm trying it out

2. Blood Bowl. Only one game in, but I love it already. Last game I've played often is Batman Miniatures, although less than I was at the start of the year

3. Blood Bowl again, although Malifaux, DC Universe and Batman are games I love playing and have also played recently

Konflict 47 1, 2, 3 for me. I prefer the rules to those of B.A. The slight differences make it a better game in my opinion

Last purchase was Battlegroup, first game next weekend. Last one I have played was DBMM which is great fun, if written in a style that makes actually reading it awkward

hint to game authors: write so your audience can understand you, not to try and demonstrate your brilliance with the language.

really enjoying 15mm Ancients stuff

"The last" is mostly just coincidence.

1: AoS got a new edition most recently, seems like they've improved things and added lots of fun extras. A nice game if you want to roll dice around great looking mini's and have an epic battle.
2: I play Kings of War, Infinity, Malifaux, AoS and 40k. Kings of War happened to be the last game I played, though I play KoW and Infinity most often. The epic games of Warhammer are great, but best if played casually, IMO. Which is fun when relaxing is the aim, but I'm more of a competitive player, because I like a challenging game (not building the best list);
3: So I've really been enjoying KoW, Infinity and Malifaux.

That kind of writing style is common in ancients (historical, before gun powder became big) systems I'm afraid. It's precise, but reads like a legal document.
Enjoying Impetus for 6mm and 15mm at the moment, but I hear ADLG is gaining ground.

Nah, they sorted it for DBA V3, and have played other Ancients games that had no trouble being clear, its just the DBM/DBMM rules that need updating to avoid the legalese.

There is a deference between writing clear rules that are precise and writing impenetrable rules that try to be precise but fail because no swine can read them

ADLG is a thing locally, if Amazon had the book I'd have bought it by now, fun game that, and yet another way to use the same models I already have - it will be on order soon enough

The last thing I bought was Shadow War Armageddon, I think, because it gave me an excuse to collect a few Battle Sisters (I don't want an entire army, but I would like a few).
Before that, I think it was Open Combat, which I saw demoed at Salute last year. (I was mostly over there to talk with Gav Thorpe, but I tried the game and liked it).

The last thing I played was My Inquisitor Revised Edition project, to playtest some new rules.

... and while I won't say I didn't enjoy that, I did enjoy myself massively more at the Inquisitor event at the London Grand Tournament back in May (which did not use the Revised Edition, but a slightly house-ruled version of the original rulebook). Although I mostly ran the Saturday, the attendees took the time to GM their own games on the Sunday, and I got the chance to join in with those, including some hilarious shenanigans with my characters trying to booby trap a squigeon with a krak grenade.

1. Outremer: Faith and Blood: Skirmish Wargames in the Crusades (Osprey Wargames)
2. Star Saga (Coming to the end of the campaign. I enjoyed it initially, but am getting a bit bored with it now after a dozen games in the campaign as it is feeling a bit "samey" now.
3. Gaslands. I have played 2 games of this and it was a blast. I'm looking forward to the next opportunity for a game which won't be for a few weeks yet.

Interesting you mention Outremer. I have a copy of the rules on my desk right now, and I have been reading through them for a review. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Edit: My most recent game played is now a board game called Flashpoint. It was a cooperative firefighting game. I actually found it kind of boring so it did not replace my last enjoyed game.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!
