New questions
So the next question I have is about the beta tactical reserves, it gives examples of genestealers cults and the stratagems being exempt so does that mean that all units that are hidden on the battlefield and reveal themselves are also exempt? Like the assassins and other units with similar abilities

Original post
First let me say I searched the forums and couldn’t find a thread similar to my questions. So if anyone knows where one is don’t hesitate to post the link! So I’ve been building my lists wrong and my open play friend is trying to get my back into the tournament mindset, we’ve been playing matched itc games. In the middle of our last game a guy walked by and said you’ve got To many of the same units. So my questions

Is this only characters or if I try to take a brigade of guard can I take 6 infantry squads or do I have to take 3 and 3 constrips/scions?

If I take multiple detachments can I take multiple same unit choices?

If I take a squad of leman Russ or solo russ’s Do the different varieties count as russ’s Or do they count as different tanks?

I’m like falling apart from this limit I have adeptus custodes and the limited choices in units fething ruins my lists I wanted to run 4 shield captains on bikes and 4 squads of praetor bikes now I have like 600points I need to fill with non bike units. I get why they did it make us buy more options and make it more fun for our opponents but ughh feth that rule.

And for adeptus custodes I was watching a batrep where the guys mentioned bikes with salvo launchers don’t take a negative for moving and shooting heavy weapons but I can’t seem to find the ruleing on this. Was that a house rule or did I just miss it?

1) Rule of 3 doesn't apply to Troops or Dedicated Transports.
2) No, the Rule of 3 applies across all detachments. You get to use the same datasheet 3 times, period.
3) Each squadron counts as one choice, because GW are morons and forgot the Rule of 3 doesn't actually affect the Astra Copywritum. You can theoretically take up to 54 Leman Russes due to Forge World and the Index. The turret weapon you choose for the normal Leman Russes has no bearing on the Rule of 3. For example, if you take a single squadron, one with Battle Cannon, one with Punisher, one with Exterminator, that's still only a single squadron and one pick towards the Rule of 3 Limit.
4) The Rule of 3 was designed specifically to stop you doing that.
5) Afaik Vertus Praetors and other Custodes Jetbikes do not ignore the penalty for moving and firing Heavy Weapons, so as usual people who make 40k batreps have zero clue of what they are talking about.

Keep in mind the Rule of 3 is only a suggestion for Organised Play. It's up to the individual TO how/if to use it, and it doesn't apply by default to one off Matched Play games.

Sucks not being able to just spam those broken units huh?

Multiple detachments do no over ride the rule of three. However troops and dedicated transports are exempt. So you can run as many infantry squads as you like with no limit (no need to take conscripts). As for the custodes, you are going to have to take some of those "lesser" units.

Squadrons only count as 1 choice, so a squadron of basilisks (3) is one datasheet, so you could have a total of 9

The matched play rule is that you can only have 3 of the same datasheet in your army unless they are Troops or Dedicated Transport battlefield role, which have no limit.

Please, stop saying that. It's NOT a Matched Play Rule. Never has been, it's a rule for ORGANISED PLAY. That is NOT the same thing as Matched Play.

Thanks for the speedy replies I’m just butt hurt cuz I spent 600$ on units I can’t use now expect for open play and the tournaments that don’t take the rule of 3

I see the reply’s on Russ squads I’m still a bit confused is the Russ the unit or is a squad of executioners separate verse a squad of battle cannons?

Also how does this affect imperial knights? Are the paladins a different unit then errants and so on?

The unit is Leman Russ Battle Tanks, it can contain up to 3 Leman Russes. What they are equipped with is irrelevant.

Again, it's really simple. If they have different datasheets, they have different datasheets.

It really comes down to page space, if they are part of the same data card they are a single type. If Forge World posts a variant on it's own Data Card then it counts as a separate type. Each Type can only be used 1+(Point total/1000) round up

So we have are Russ tanks in the AM book

Each Squad can have 3 tanks, each squad can be taken 3 times=9 Russ

Furthermore we can take 3 Tank Commanders, and a single Knight Commander Pask (as it is part of the data card). Now I don't own any of the Forge World books. BUT if each is on it's own Data Card you can field each 3 times...but from the main book you can field a total of 13

I said that once....

And they are similar enough that most people will use the rules for organised play in their home match play games.

So, I did some thinking and what the guy probably meant is that because the Salvo Launcher gets +1 to hit against things with FLY, this counters the -1 for moving with Heavy weapons.

My friends and I try to do the tournament rules but this rule was something we didn’t know about.
