Devestating Grey Knight Dreadknight

After playing in a smaller tournament yesterday, I got into a discussion with some old-timers about the size of games. So for fun, I've pulled out my old codices and totaled up how many points my 8th edition armies would be in previous editions:

Grey Knights:
8th - 2000 pts
Last list I ran was mainly strikes and interceptors, with 2 GMDK and Voldus
6th/7th - 2207 pts
Subbed Draigo for Voldus and normal dreadknights for the grandmaster versions
5th/6th - 2525 pts
Again subbing Draigo for Voldus and normal dreadknights for the grandmaster versions

Alot of the model costs are similar, the big changes are mainly wargear (with the exception of the dreadknights). I didn't expect 5th edition to be a full 25% more expensive though! I also found an IK list I took to NOVA in 7th: 1850 pts (Lancer, Castigator, Warden, Errant, Gallant). In 8th, the list comes to 2140 pts.

How many points would your current army be across editions?

My experience with 8th has been the opposite, my armies are much smaller now than they used to be. Taking goofy stuff like Dark Angel Lion’s Blade formations with free transports out of the equation I am still seeing a significant drop in model count from 7th to 8th edition, mostly due to the increase in vehicle costs. I have always enjoyed using tanks and transports and I still bring them. I don’t have precise point values but here are some rough breakdowns on model count.

Imperial Guard
104 infantry 12 vehicles in 7th
112 infantry 8 vehicles in 8th

Sisters of Battle
65 infantry 8 vehicles in 7th
60 infantry 6 vehicles in 8th

Dark Angels
46 infantry 6 vehicles in 7th
54 infantry 5 vehicles in 8th

Grey Knights
35 infantry 5 vehicles and a Dreadknight in 7th
26 infantry 3 vehicles and a DKGM in 8th

Tyranids
Pretty much the same. Still a great big carpet of gribblies and 5 or 6 monsters running about.

The only list I really did the math on was my final Dark Angels army in 7th. With the changeover to 8th it went from 2000 points to a little over 2600 points. It was not a Lion’s Blade and didn’t have any free stuff, but literally every model except Tactical Marines went up in point cost.

The question is kind of moot if you're not taking the same loadouts you took in previous editions. If for example, a model used to cost more in a previous edition and you didn't take it then it was probably just overcosted. You were taking other, more efficient options now that you're no longer taking because they probably cost too much now. It's generally more interesting to see what old competitive armies cost now than the other way around.

My orks are much, MUCH smaller than they were in 7th in 8th. I run speed freeks and most of my vehicles more than doubled in price...for no real additional benefit.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Just punching the new points into my spreadsheets when 8th dropped the points values went up around 20-25% from 7th to 8th.

I have far too much stuff to go and get actual numbers (about 30K painted).

My army dropped significantly. However the only other edition I played heavily was 2nd ed. My Eldar army (about 5500 points right now) is easily 10-11,000 points via 2nd edition.

Likewise for my Chaos (around 4,000 points current) would be in the 8,000 point range I think.

On average - most vehicals titans and HQ's are much more expensive in 8th eddition. This leads to smaller armies.

Basically 2k is what 1850 used to be.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

My army totals when I stopped playing at the end of 5th ed (I started in RT).

Eldar: 12,000pts. Including an Armorcast revenant.
Marines: 11,000pts (full battlecompany with all transport options and command units). The legacy of about 20 years collecting.
GK: 4500pts. All metals. In one case.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

GW finally figured out that if they drop the point cost of models 20% across the board then people will have to buy more models to fill up a tournament list.

and at the rate models are removed from the table in the opening turns the rules support larger armies as well.

I don't dare add up what I used to have for 8th.
It's a rather boring, dull and laborious task in 8th Edition. I can only manage flicking back and forth and back and forth and back and forth for maybe 1000pts
After that I lose my will to live.

But I know from the past my 2000pts 4th edition Armoured company comes to about 2100pts in 8th

That would explain why points went up and armies shrunk for 8th then?

Spreadsheets with lookups are the answer to this. Type Lascannon and have the point entered for you. Plus when CA updates the points you just change it once and all of your lists update.

If you're interested then PM me and I'll share my Google docs spreadsheet.

My army was over 23,000 points when I stopped counting last edition. I haven't bothered to adjust points for this edition.
I like 8th and I think it plays well at 1500 to 2000 points and I play infrequently so I haven't set up a large game yet. so I have had no reason to see just how many points my army would be now.
I wouldn't be against playing a larger game but I haven't had the time and my pool of opponents has changed due to the edition change. Last edition a 10,000 point game was fairly common for a few of us. (I mean 10,000 points per player.)

I am thinking about how best to downsize what I have. I will probably get rid of quite a bit too Don't need 14 flyers any more....

Checked just for fun, and the 1,500pt partially-homebrewed AdMech army I ran the other day (Magos, Tech-Priest, 12 Thallaxii, 20 Hoplites, 2 Domitars, Knight-Acheron) would be 1,900pts if I were to run it in 30k right now.

Eldar and Harlequins and Exodites.

2nd edition : over 22,000 points

3rd edition : over 17,000 points with VDR

8th edition: over 16,000 points (mind you that a lot of the increase here is with the cost in Titans jumping after CA)

I run a lot of Primaris stuff in my current DA lists, so it's impossible to say what it would have cost in 7th edition. My Tau list however costs much more than it would have in 7th due to higher costs on the big suits (many of which were quite undercosted in 7th). A lot of the stuff I run for Chaos was hot garbage in 7th (Noise Marines, Berzerkers, Oblits), so I haven't really compared the costs.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
