I take it this is a 7th edition collection you are trying to bring up to speed for 8th? One big thing is that a lot of options have changed, like artificer armor for captains.

One thing in 8th is that you don’t get the bonus for paired weapons anymore, so taking a decent gun and choppy bit is not a bad option. For the points, I’d take a TH over the relic blade, but the sword isn’t a bad choice. Plasma pistols are down to a decent price, so worth it. Tossing a stormbolter on a captain (or anyone really) is not a bad use of points either.
Chaplains on foot have the same problems they always have had. CC character with limited mobility. They basically work the same way they always did, and CC is still generally playing 2nd fiddle to shooting. But you have to love those crazed zealots.

Librarians are nice. Good source of buffs/mortal wounds.

in other HQ news, Lieutenants are back in the game, and provide a nice buff, might want to look into them (fluff wise, there should be two in a company)

You are one terminator shy of the squad. They are a little tougher then they used to be vs. small arms, about the same vs. the big stuff. Not horrible, but not game breaking either.

Command squads have been broken up into a selection of elite pics. Yours seem decent. The one thing I might avoid of the SS on the PF guy. He no longer strikes last, but at -1 to hit instead. And the shield bumps his points up a bit. That might be my miserly side talking though.

In general plasma is much better then grav. IMHO grav still has a place for squads that are going to be outside of any re-roll auras. I’d not spam it as hard as 7th. Multimeltas also took a big hit in 8th. It pays a premium price for mediocre results. There are certain edge cases where it is nice, but not as many as before. Basic melta guns are a bit overpriced, but not as bad.

Your dev squad is pretty nice. It might be worth sticking a ML or HB in there to take advantage of the stratagems. Cherub for the shoot twice is also useful.

If you are looking to build a company, there are a few things you need.

Some dreads. At least two. 8th has been pretty nice to these guys; lots of ways to go.
Lieutenants. Get two, they rock. the re-roll to wound aura is money in the bank. I’d gear one to move up, and one to sit and camp.
More Tacs. You want a company, you have to pay the tax. If you want to go new school, you could sub a lot of the old stuff for primaris. Some wiggle room here. Lots of ways to gear them up.
Some assault picks. Assault marines remain mediocre. Bikes are OK vs. light stuff, but wither and die to heavy fire. Speeders are not the best these days. But you want a company, you need to grab something Not our best spot on the FOC.
Another dev squad. Devs are pretty good these days. Gear them for what you need them for.
Transports. Rhinos/Razors are probably your go-to here. 8th was not kind to pods. Rhinos can still pull a number of nice tricks and are reasonably priced considering how tough they are. Razors are pretty underpriced for what they do.

I think the best army for a company build is going to be MSU tacs, razorbacks, and devs. Make a solid firebase with overlapping captain/LT auras and shoot stuff off the table. Advance tacs in razors (those not in the firebase) to grab objectives. Might not be top-table, but should make for a fun, fluffy game.

Been watching a lot of battle reports on youtube (WintersSEO) for 8th edition so i'm getting up to speed on what units do what

Grav guns are not as good as they were in 7th? Grrr I spent alot of time converting plasma pistol and plasma gun models over to Grav!

The Chaplain........well I used him because obviously in 7th you had to use one to get a Strike Force using 2 demi companies. But I could change him for a lieutenant.

Librarian in Terminator Armour can also count as a terminator with Thunder Hammer since he's a converted Grey Knight Paladin with Nemesis Force Stave.

Will be looking at dreads in the future. They are AWESOME again now they have loads of wounds.
Will be getting tactical squads when and where I can.
Asssault Squads are a must cause i'm doing a company (EVENTUALLY)

WIll be getting another Dev Squad

At this moment I'm not too sure about transports. Pricey, and hopefully in a lot of terrain will not need too many....

I always like a fluffy list more than a game crushing all best options list. Games should be about narrative too!

If you haven’t had a good sit down and read of the new codex, I’d recommend it. One thing that leapt out at me was you bought a drop pod for your dread, and they can’t ride in them anymore (barring the FW one)

Salamander tactics is good for Tac squads. And in general pretty nice. Take advantage of it where you can You should also look into new army structures. 2xDemi cos. is a good way to organize for the shelf, but not for the table.

Grav I think is better then non overcharged plasma, but not as good at full power against most targets. The problem is that plasma is a bit underpriced, and is not that hard to get re-rolls to make overcharging pretty safe. It’s higher base S makes it better vs. monsters/vehicles as well. Grav isn’t useless, it’s just not as good as plasma in most cases, and only just as good in others. It still has a decent niche though.

I’m favoring plasma pistols on the assault marines these days. With the rule that you can’t DS within 9” of your foe, flamers lost a lot of their shine. Still have some uses, particularly vs. things with -ToHit effects, but not as fun as they used to be.

I would vary up your tactical squads.

I’m less of a fan of MMs these days, they are a bit overpriced for what they get done. I’d look into other options for the dreads.

Looks decent.

I’ve been favoring bare-bones scouts as screens these days. Snipers and cloaks I think are a little expensive for what I see as an expendable unit. They should work though. I might see about swapping one of the HBs for a ML if you can spare the points, just to take advantage of the stratagems.

You might want to doublecheck your dread points. And for the sit back and shoot one, I’d pick one of the longer range guns.

Stormravens (and LRs) are one of the few places I still like MMs. They have PotMS to mitigate the penelty for moving/shooting, and tend to want to be close to the enemy. Not that the TML is a bad choice. Again, check you points, you seem off.

For points you need to pay for the base body/hull, and then all the guns and options. Nothing is free. (well except the options with a cost of 0) Look up everything, don’t assume that the stock gear is included in the price. Some prices were adjusted in the Chapter Approved book. I use battlescribe to help, it’s not perfect, but is pretty accurate.

Dread Points:

Dreadnought 70 points
Assault Cannon 0
MIssile Launcher 25

95

Dreadnought 70 points
Assault Cannon 0
Heavy Flamer 17

87

Are my points wrong?

Storm Bolters are 2 points. So 2 Storm Bolters on a rhino takes it to 72 points...

Missile Launcher is a long range gun! Just don't have points for a lascannon on other arm. So Assault Cannon is there for any targets that are advancing too close.

You need to pay, even for the stock gear. I can’t give you an itemized break down of wargear points, as Dakka is touchy about that.

Dreadnought is correct.
Assault cannon is not 0. Nor is it 20, as it states in the back of the book. It’s point value was raised in Chapter Approved by a couple of points.
You need to pay for the dreadnought combat weapon. It’s under the melee weapons.
Then the HF underslung from the DCCW.

So a regular dread with a AsC and a DCCW w/HF is 149 points

You don’t need to pay for gear that you have swapped out. So you don’t need to pay for the SB on the dread, or the fist if you replace it with the ML. Basically take options as given in the datasheet, and then when you are done with all the swaps and upgrades pay for all the stuff in the finished unit. It’s a little confusing at first, but once you get used to it makes a lot of sense.

But hang on, Dreadnought comes with an Assault Cannon as standard.
So you're saying that even the base model weapons you have to pay for?

SO a base Dreadnought would be:
70 + Assault Cannon 21 + Storm Bolter 2

93 points?

Getting there, you need to pay for the power fist, and the AsC is 22, not 21 points. A dread built that was would be 134 points.

Stop thinking of “standard” gear. You need to pay for everything. Build the model/unit, then point up everything on it. Just because it comes default, does not mean it comes free. Think of it as WYSWYG more capitalistic brother, What You See is What You Pay. If the gun/option is on the model you need to pay for it, if it’s not, you don’t. This is complicated somewhat because there are free things. But it’s better to think of them as cost 0 items instead.

Look at the Vindi. It costs 125. But we need to pay for the demolisher cannon. Flip to the back, and it’s 0 points. As the only thing that has it in out codex, they just baked the cost into the vindi. They are inconsistent like that sometimes.

Or the basic tac marine.
13 points for the body
0 points for the bolter
0 points for the bolt pistol
0 points for the frag grenade
0 points for the krack grenade.

They might be “free” but you still need to pay your 0 points, if that make’s sense.

The corollary to this is that you don’t pay for things you don’t have. Sternguard come standard equipped with special issue bolt guns, which cost 2 points. If you swap that out for a combi melta, you don’t need to pay those points. Just the points for the combi. You pay for the body, then the gear he has.

I’d recommend grabbing a copy of Battlescribe. It’s not a substitute for the codex, but makes the pricing a lot easier.

That help?

Few changes:

Switching Combi-Gravs on Sergeants to Combi-Flamers.

If you have a combi-weapon it's best to have one that auto-hits and also gives better crowd control.

Changing colour scheme to green to make them more Salamandery. I just love the colour of Dark Angels and Salamanders more than cream white.
