Why is this in the Warhammer Fantasy forum? Well let me explain.

First of all, let me admit that I bought Mordhiem back in the day when it first came out. I did think it was cool, but just wasn't into Fantasy at the time so I didn't have much of a frame of reference for the setting. I ended up getting rid of it during the purge of 2010.

It wasn't long after that did I buy the Witch Hunter novel to take on a trip. I wasn't reading it for very long until I started being reminded of Mordheim, and how I wished I had held on to it. Up till that point I really had only seen Warhammer in the context of massive armies clashing, but not appreciated it for its smaller storylines and events outside of major battles.

Well, after diving into Warhammer 6th (and 7th and 8th) recently, I thought more and more about Mordhiem. I know its set some 500 years before 6th, but it still feels like 6th. Actually, its amazing how amazing 6th is, because its the skirmish rules in 6th that gave birth to Mordheim. So I decided to bight the bullet and not only get a new copy of Mordheim (and yes, it set me back), but also the best of Town Cryer and Empire in Flames, along with Witch Hunters and The Possessed box sets (working on getting the Undead). So I sat down to read everything in a new light and WOW.

So freakin awesome.

Let me just say that between my 6th, 7th and 8th sets, my Ravening Hordes, annuals, Generals Compendium, the Mordheim Rulebook, Best of Town Cryer, and Empire in Flames, I have a stunningly amazing variety of playing multiple types of games with the same miniatures. I not only have 6 nice starter armies that I have expanded a little on (Empire, Orcs, Dwarves, Goblins, High Elves, and Skaven), and warbands for Mercenaries, Skaven, Witch Hunters, and the Possessed, but I have ways of using many of these interchangeable between the games. I can borrow Empire minis has hired swords, can use my Orcs and Goblin WFB armies to make a Mordhiem warband, can use my Dwarf WFB to make a Dwarf Treasure Hunters for Mordheim, can use my Mordheim Mercenaries as Free Militia in WFB, etc etc. And I can just use minis from both to play out normal Warhammer Skirmish battles

While I have 7th and 8th rulebooks, I don't think either are as impressive as 6th in terms of what kind of games I can get from them. I am surprised how comprehensive 6th and that era is regarding gameplay, and how limited in scope the later versions became. I guess it was the business model of selling more minis I guess.

Anyway, I have learned my lesson from the last time I sold Mordheim and that won't happen again. I haven't been this excited about a collection in a long, long time, and my collection is much smaller than most and I don't intend to get much more. I have a bunch of ways to try out playing the same miniatures and are really looking forward to finish assembling everything.

Oh dear. Didn't they tell you that the secret lies in the massive amount of warpstone added to the ink the books of 6th and Mordheim have been printed with?

Enjoy!

Rat Ogres! I can use the Rat Ogres from the 8th edition starter set for my Skaven mordheim warband!

So. Awesome.

Wish they would do something like this for 40k.

Well, I don't see Space Marines, Tau Fire Warriors, or Eldar Aspect Warriors in Necromunda. Then again, I haven't read the new rulebook either.

If you don't mind house rules, and I find skirmishing games like this to be a good place for them, you could probably get a good idea of what a space marine would work like. Give them a rule that bolt guns rarely fail their ammo roll and away you go!

SM vs Gangers might be one sided in the fluff, but you could probably balance the SM around a max of 5 models in the "gang" with 1 or 2 scouts as "juves". Amazing combat ability, but tough for them to cover the bases for objective bases missions.

You could probably counts-as Orks as Goliaths. Tau as Van Saar(?) if VS is the techy gang. If there's a fast faction, they could probably counts-as Nids. Eldar would just have +1 to all stats except S and T, but only cost 1 more point and have a 4++ save, and scatter lasers for everyone.

(Just joking. 2 points more. Git Ghuud!)

Mordheim didn’t have all the WFB armies present either - that would be Warhammer Skirmish, which came along later. Like Necromunda, Mordheim’s factions were specific to the smaller scope of the game.

Pretty much all of them were added in via White Dwarf, the GW website, or the Mordheim Magazine, plus others like Amazons and Pit Fighters.

Original Mordheim was:
Humans of various flavors
Undead
Cult of the Possessed
Skaven
Sisters of Sigmar
Witchhunters

Lustria added Lizardman, Dark Elves, Clan Pestilence and Amazon's.
Empire in Flames added Carnival of Chaos and Beastmen.
Town Cryer had Dwarves and Orcs.
I think there were a few other warbands and Mordheimer added pretty much everything else and then some.

Crap I had no idea about Lustria. Now I have to hunt that book down too. Especially since one day I'll prob make a small Lizardman army to match my others.

It wasn't a book but a series of articles in Town Crier. Started in TC #13, IIRC.

There was also a High Elf Shadow Warriors band that had some pretty cool minis. They were actually cooler than either the 5th or 6th Ed. pewters. And my favorite model of all time, possibly: a female vampire that was a vampire hunter. Coolest model ever. She's my Von Carstein lord currently.

*pedant mode on* Ahem, well, actually...

...Mordheim was released during 5th edition. So it gave birth to the skirmish rules in 6th, not the other way around.

Which, er, AndrewGPaul has more or less already mentioned. But I'm in pedant mode, so you get pedantry.

Mordheim did prefigure a lot of the darker, grittier tone of 6th, though. So it's not surprising it feels similar.

Lucky git. I'm still searching for that mini at a sensible price... (and the Amazons...)

Lucky is right. The only reason I even HAVE the fig is because I strolled into a store in Minnesota while visiting and saw it on the shelf. I didn't even know it existed since I didn't follow Town Cryer.
