Bought a copy of Dark Imperium on a Father's Day sale, and I decided to e-bay the Death Guard minis and Base Rulebook (as I already have a copy of the BRB). The minis sold in less than six hours. After a week, the BRB looks like it isn't going to sell (and I've looked at the sold listings - my cost is comparable to others that sold, oddly).
It got me wondering, just how popular the rulebooks actually are - do you own a copy of the 8E BRB? If not, are you just using the downloadable rules or some similar pamphlet?

Naah. The pamphlet has all the things I need. Scenarios are so atrociously bad don't spend one euro to get them. Better scenarios elsewhere. Even CA scenarios, despite not being best options, beat them and is mandatory anyway.

The books cost too much, I do not have the rule book. The index and codex have a high enough cost for me to not want to buy anything. Plus they aren't really helping much. It is not like there is some magic bullet in the rulebook that will make playing my army better.

I picked it up off eBay for £18.
As I'm back playing after a very long lay off, it was worth every penny. I very much enjoyed reading the fluff and getting familiar with the back story again.

I do, but accidentally XD
A friend of mine got it ordered by mail, the package got lost and GW sent a new copy.
Fast forward a few months, original package finds it's way to him somehow, he has two copies and give me the spare.

No. Read and memorised the basic rules in 2 minutes because 8th is just that simple. Never need a BRB again.

Most of us at my club do. The missions and detachment info isn't in the pamphlet, amongst a lot of the other rules (what there is of them).

I have my copy from DI.
It’s not a bad book. The rules part I don’t actually reference it much for, as I have the little fold out pamphlet rules, but I do reference it for the scenarios. And I did read it through for the new fluff/background/pretty pictures.
Would I pay full price for it? No.
Do I enjoy having it on the shelf? Yes.
I think GW charges too much for their rules, and it creates a barrier of entry to the game. I like how the BRB is more optional these days, but wish they would shift their whole paradigm. I’d rather spend more on models.

I got it on ebay for pre order for £10. This was when dark imperium came out. I seriously thought it was a scam, they cancelled the order but took my money. Then 2 days later the book arrived in my door the day the book came out officially! It's crazy! XD

I haven't spent a single penny on any 8e books. As I wait for the ork codex I get to see where this game evolves. So far I'm still unimpressed. For example this new trend to dictate how models should be painted for the rules turns me off. I don't know, maybe I'll buy the dex, maybe I won't. We'll see. One thing is for certain, I opted out of paying money to beta test their new edition.

Interesting to see that some people here seem to ignore the background and scenario part, which is possibly the most important aspect for me

I don't. The basic rules pamphlet was enough to get going along with the Index books. Detachment rules weren't hard to find.
Given how many FAQs there have been is there even any printed version of the rules in an official book that's right anyway?

I bought it on release and, tbh, pretty much instantly regretted it. I’m far from an inveterate GW-basher but the fact that there’s something like 140 pages of background material which I have no interest in (either due to having read it all several times before over previous editions, or it being dreadful Primaris/Primarch nonsense) before you even get to the rules was a bit of a let-down for me. I don’t particularly object to it beyond the fact that it’s 140 A4 pages to lug about which I don’t actually need to play a game. Particularly given how streamlined the core rules are (not to mention separately available in the Battle Primer PDF/pamphlet), I rather resent having to carry such a cumbersome book around just for the relatively sparse rules section. Automatically Appended Next Post: Would have much preferred it if GW had made the A5 version from the fancy rules set (which I believe just had the rules bit of the big book) available separately, even if it had been the same price as the large boy.

No. I use their battle primer from the website and basically remember the rest. I don't play enough to justify buying a rulebook but even if I did I'd hesitate to buy one. Like the codexes it's a fair bit of money when a lot of what I get is just repeated lore and stuff I don't want. If they sold books that were literally just the stratagems and rules I'd consider buying those.

I have it. It's good to be able to review the (9 pages of) rules on occasion outside of playing the game. Cuts down on 'wait let me double-check' moments in the actual game.

I borrowed one to make my 8th ed cheat sheet (all the basic rules, laminated). I don't play any of the rulebook missions so other than that I don't need it for anything.
I have friends who have it on PDF but I haven't bothered getting it myself. Besides, again, using a cheat sheet I can edit the rules as they're adjusted by FAQ and Chapter Approved, etc.
I would own a rulebook if they sold a cheap $15 softback version of the book with just the rules. I don't need a large heavy book which is 85% fluff to carry around.

My personal opinion is that you cannot play this game without the main rule + your army codex/index. Period, no exceptions. Aside from just "trying" some thing out in a casual game prior to the purchase
To do otherwise invites "accidental" cheating. It is not my responsibility to correct your rules, nor is it fair to me that you are going off memory.
Sometimes my armies rules interact with yours in a specific way, if you don't have you codex/index AND the main rules to compare them too, you could be misremembering something.
Having said that, we live in an age in which physical copies are not necessary. As long as you have the rules IN SOME FORM, whether BRB, minibook, a PDF on you tablet, whatever, we are good.
But this game got complicated pretty quick after the codices started dropping, so while you certainly need you codex, it is almost as important to have the main rules to reference for those odd situations in which your rules interact in a weird way.

I bought it, hate it, wish I hadn't.
I want a 15$ soft-cover without all the fluff and stuff but I wouldn't feel right playing a game without actually owning the rule book.
I bought all the indexes, rules, CA, DA, BA, Dw, SM, Custode, IG codexes and again, if I could just get a 15$ softcover with the rules without all the fluff and stuff my overall feeling of getting shafted would be a lot less. I mean that's like 500 bucks (and like 20 pounds) of books for like 50 pages of stuff that I use. Not to mention the weight and that the majority of stuff that I use has been so errata'd/faq'd I feel like I have as many hand written notes (backed by 30 pages of print-outs) as rules from GW.
At this point a 10$ a month subscription to a digital library would honestly be my preferred method but idiots like me that keep giving GW money for a terrible product are the problem.

I bought the book and bring it with me every time I play. I view it as my responsibility to have access to all of the rules I will need to play. Consequently I am constantly answering questions from those too cheap or lazy to have the rule book with them.

I've only ever bought one rulebook for all of my 40k and fantasy gaming. You shouldn't have to spend $80 on a rulebook when it costs hundreds of dollars just to have miniatures to use.
Perhaps I am just fortunate enough to always have a community that has rulebooks available, but I think they made the right call with allowing the 8th ed. rules to be "free." I regret buying Dark Imperium.
Primaris Marines outside of deathwatch are a flat joke, and the rulebook itself is completely pointless. What question at this point could you possibly see that is answered by the core rulebook?
