She might not have the prettiest voice in the industry, but it is sure strong and easy to identify - Anneke van Giersbergen. She used to sing in The Gathering but went off for a career of her own and seems to be wanted by anyone making a metal record these days. Accept no substitutes.
But if y'all want something a bit more modern, I happen to like Epica:

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine. Probably one of the most talented vocalists of my generation. Her voice turns all my sad thoughts in to happy thoughts.

Dammit, I'm agreeing with a whembly post in OT. Hell must truly be frozen over...
And here she is covering Judas Priest and doing a really good job of it:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, we can not have a female vocalists thread without a Nightwish post. And just to avoid the civil war I'm going to post one from each era:

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
I can agree on Lzzy, but their new joint isn't the best.
A Couple more:
Clémentine Delauney
Sharon den Adel
Alys Crisp
CJ Gilpin

I really like some of Alanis Morissette's music, especially these two tracks:
I also like the voice of Enya very much:
For more vocals of the same general type as Enya, I highly recommend you look up Celtic Woman. Those ladies have some of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Anna Murphy was really good in Eluvietie. There new female vocalist is decent, but I think Anna was better. I haven't listed to much of Cellar Darling though.
I also love Billie Holiday, Florence Welch, Ann Wilson and many others mentioned in this thread.
Overread wrote: @Peregrine I'm going to take it one further and say that Floor is probably the best/my favourite of all three
I agree. Nightwish is my favorite band and I think that Floor is the best singer they've had. I particularly like her version of Storytime.
A few that haven't been mentioned yet:
Cammie Gilbert from Oceans of Slumber. I don't care as much for their harsh vocals, but I think Cammie Gilbert is amazing.
Tatiana Shmailyuk from Jinjer. I think their songs mostly get shared as a surprise gag, kind of like Babymetal, but unlike Babymetal I think they're actually really good.
Nitte Valo from Battle Beast. I think she has a great voice for Heavy Metal. (Warning: excessive amounts of cheese in this song/video.)
I really like Cary Ann Hearst from the duo Shovels & Rope.
Star Anna (My favorite song of hers is Crooked Path, but Youtube only seems to have poorly recorded live versions of that one)
I'll probably leave it at that for now. There's lots more, but it's getting late and for some reason a lot of my favorite female vocalists don't have much up on youtube.

I'm currently on a synthwave kick, but punk and ska are my roots. Local Toronto band from when I lived there called the Creepshow was always amazing. I was fortunate enough to see them open for Rancid, which is probably one of the best shows I'll ever see.
Anyways, here's a fairly 'mainstream' song they do;
And something a little more typical;
The Distillers are also great, lead by Brody Dalle.

Origa (Olga Vitalevna Yakovleva) who I knew only for this one song that I heard a few years ago and couldn't remember the name of. Only to learn that she did many of the songs for the Ghost in the Shell Stand alone Complex , Final fantasy and others!
