Figured since we just crossed the midway point of the year, I'd start up a conversation about how our respective hobby resolutions for this year are going (assuming you had any). Since I started the thread, I'll go first of course.

1) Assemble at least a box of miniatures a month, This one I've been pretty solid on, usually getting through a lot of assembly in any given month so far. I do seem to acquire more than I'm assembling though, so that's not quite what i was going for, but in terms of the resolution a solid win.

2) Paint an army per quarter (defined as a fieldable force, not necessarily 100% of models). Goose-egg here. As far as the pace of having 4 painted armies by the end of the year that might be possible as I have about 3 FoW armies that are actually nearly done, but close only counts in horseshoes and nuclear war, as they say.

3) Don't buy into any new game systems. Close to successful; I did buy the new Soul Wars set for AoS, but given that I had a half-dozen WHFB armies that doesn't really count as "new" in the same way as War Machine or Bolt Action would in my mind. Still technically a system I didn't do anything with before.

So 1 success, 1 kind-of-sort-of and 1 not-yet-but-maybe. Not impressive, but not a complete write-off either.

How about you guys? Better/worse?

Here are my New Year’s resolutions:

1 Finish painting the odds and ends from my friend's SOB army that I worked on. Just a handfull of arcoflagelents, spare immolater weapons, some IG HQs.
2 Paint more then I buy. 28/58
3 Paint At least 12 spare bits. I've magetized a number of things, painted the primary set up, but never get around to doing the other options. 9/12
4 Try to get more games in. Optimally 24, with at least some being AoS. 10/24
5 Update my blog at least once a week, and maintain a consistent pace of work (1 mini a week).
6 Get my Eldar army to a larger level, 2 more full squads minimum, aiming to be more comfortable at 2k.
7 Enter and finish an entry every month for the painting challenge. If the monthly challenge stops, enter at least one comp in the year. In addition, paint something odd from the back of the bench a/o try out a new technique every month.

1 Nope, no progress
2 This was all fine and dandy until yesterday when I came home with the Nighthaunt half of the new AoS box and a SC: Deathwatch. That said, 58 is within my normal range for a year’s work, I just need to not buy much more.
3 Ahead of schedule
4 Bit behind, but got in a game of AoS yesterday,
5 Good
6 Got half of a guardian squad done so far, with 2 more WIPs ATM. Also, just started putting layers down on a WL, so this is looking good.
7 So far, so good.

You're more ambitious than me with more than twice the resolutions.

Also good to hear someone out there is mostly keeping to their goals. I envy your discipline.

Mine was to paint 365 models in a year. I got 75 primaris and 12 Grey Knights done, but then got sidetracked assembling and converting 80 Custodes and 50 space wolves.

This Is Where the Fish Lives

1. Finish my USMC army for Bolt Action. I have an M5 Stuart done and a couple of marines... and that's it! I have a full squad assembled and ready for paint, so I'll start there and then move on to the rest.
2. Start and then finish my Soviet army for Bolt Action. I got the starter army box for Christmas but I won't start it until my marines are done.
3. Finish my British North Africa army for FoW. It's mostly done, I just have some infantry stands and gun crews to paint, but I'd really like to get it 100% done.
4. Finish my late war British army for FoW. This is only in the very beginning stages, but I plan on getting it on the table before long!
1. Not even close.
2. I actually decided to go with this army before my USMC and it's pretty far along. I have two full squads I need to paint, plus some smaller squads, but everything is built and can be played with.
3. Not done because I added a bunch of stuff to it. Also, I started an Italain army that's taking a bunch of my time now.
4. My 22nd Armoured Brigade is pretty much done, but I need to add some support still.

My non-gaming hobby resolution pretty much one thing and that is to complete the the numerous models I have in various stages of progress. The following models are on my desk right now (all 1/35 scale):
  • Renault FT (riveted turret) from Meng is painted with a base coat
  • Mk.I female tank from Takom that is almost completely assembled save for the machine gun sponsons
  • SU-18 (an interwar Soviet self-propelled gun based on the T-18) that's assembled, save the tracks, and ready for primer
  • ISU-152 from Tamiya that is painted and has decals on it, ready for weathering.
  • M3 Lee from Takom that I started last night thanks to a bout of insomnia so it's only partially assembled
  • 1. Done
    2. Painted but not weathered
    3. No progress, packed away
    4. No progress, packed away

I'm in the process of selling my house and then moving in with my mother-in-law until our new house is done in October/November which means most of my hobby stuff is packed away.

To be fair, there is a lot of overlap. A number of them could be summed up under the 1-a-week goal, just with footnotes to paint assorted things.

I set reasonable goals. I found when I set more aggressive ones, I didn’t feel bad when I missed them. But when I set ones that I know are obtainable, it’s on me when I don’t reach them. Helps keep me honest.

When I finally finish moving I intend to finish my Rogue Trader/2nd Edition Eldar, as since packing everything up I have not been able to do much.

Also want to complete tweaking my Sisters so that they have more options for 8th Edition. So some models to paint there.

    Continue building more terrain.

Now that I will have a hobby room and can leave projects out I should be able to complete those.

    Cheers,

    CB

Never posted anything but I had the resolution to finish painting my Tyranids by the end of the year. I’ve made some progress, but not enough. Have got some other things finished and out of the way though.

Black Bases and Grey Plastic Forever:My quaint little hobby blog.

    40k- The Kumunga Swarm (more)
Count Mortimer’s Private Security Force/Excavation Team (building)
Kabal of the Grieving Widow (less)

Plus other games- miniature and cardboard both.

Didn't set any specific New Years Resolutions, but I did have some loose goals.

I intended to learn and play Bolt Action, my army sits in its case unpainted (but built at least, so as a goal I can still easily reach it).
I also intended to start playing The Other Side by Wyrd. Kickstarter has shipped, so my models are on the way, and I know the game rules well enough to get started (I'll take that as complete so far).
Batman Miniatures, I fully painted everything I own, so that's another achievement ticked off.
Terrain I intended to paint my Batman board, it's not even fully built (but I have another board 100% done at least).
Malifaux I've gotten games in, painted a bit, every master I own now is painted so it's down to random other picks (about halfway through the backlog, so I'll take it as done)
This Is Not A Test and Blood Bowl both blindsided me a bit, but I have a fully painted warband for TNT (not that I've ever played) and am currently painting my Blood Bowl team for my league

All in all, I've had a pretty productive year of hobby, and in the next few weeks of break time I'm expecting to get a lot more done

    DC:90S++G+++MB+IPvsf17#++D++A+++/mWD409R+++T(Ot)DM+

I mainly play 30k, but am still fairly active with 40k. I play Warcry, Arena Rex, Middle-Earth, Blood Bowl, Batman, Star Wars Legion as well

No specific resolutions, but I did a brief mid-year recap:
    * built a bunch of Kingdom Death minis and stuff
    * played a fair bit of Kingdom Death : Monster

Overall, I think it's gone well. I'll finish off the Kingdom Death stuff that I've broken the seal on, them work on some robots and fantasy stuff.

Okay, here's mine. First, my goals from New Year's:
ZergSmasher wrote:1) Paint more models than 2017, meaning 66 or more.
    2) FINISH THE PARTIALLY PAINTED MODELS, DAMMIT!
    3) Take a fully-painted army to a tournament in 2018, besides Adepticon, which I have to bring fully painted models to.
    4) Finish the Dark Imperium set's models. Still have a Lord of Contagion, Noxious Blightbringer, Malignant Plaguecaster, Foetid Bloat-drone, and 10 more Poxwalkers to do.
    5) Get a lightbox and take better photos.
    6) Stop buying every shiny thing that comes across my path. That may mean staying away from eBay unless there's something specific I really need. Specific goal for this is to paint more than I buy and therefore reduce the pile of shame.
    7) Finish working on the bits boxes.
    8) Bonus Goal: Finish an army. As in fully painted and based. Not likely, which is why I'm considering it a bonus rather than an actual goal as it's unlikely to happen in 2018.

    How I'm doing so far:
    1) Done. And done. 85 and counting, and the year is barely half over. Feels great!
    2) Most of the stuff that was partially painted at the start of the year is still in the state it was in. No progress to report.
    3) Not yet, but I've got one coming up that I have to be painted for, so it's going to happen.
    4) Haven't gotten around to it yet. Too much other stuff has higher priority. Plenty of year left to make it happen though.
    5) No lightbox, but I do feel happier with my photos, so I'll call myself at least partly successful.
    6) I'm doing better than last year. I'm not sure my count is accurate, but if I only count things I actually bought (rather than traded for or was in the Adepticon swag bag), I picked up 52 models so far this year, which means between the 85 I've painted and the 24 unpainted Daemon models I sold I've actually made a dent in the pile of shame!
    7) I've made more progress, but there's a lot more left. A LOT more.
    8) I knew from the outset that this one was going to be nigh impossible, hence why I consider it a bonus. Unless I consider Officio Assassinorum to be an army, in which case MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Just kidding, it's probably not going to happen in the next 2 years honestly.

My new painted model goal for this year, since I blew my previous one out of the water, is 120 models. Since I'm painting some bigger stuff now (like Knights), that's going to slow down the count, but I think 120 is still very achievable. I just need to quit getting sidetracked by computer games; focus on plastic crack rather than electronic crack. My painting more than I buy goal may be in trouble as well, since I've got plans to pick up the Know No Fear box set (I need MOAR PRIMARIS and MOAR DEATHGUARD!) as well as a minimum Astra Militarum battalion as an ally for my Knights. Plus a Knight Castellan, but that's just one model.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
    Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

I have been surprised at how much I have completed, but I was deliberately weak in my painting/modelling goals. Otherwise, full steam ahead into the second half of the year!

I don't consider it "weak" so much as "setting achievable goals"; I'm a big fan of that approach because setting a big goal and failing is discouraging to me and makes me less likely to continue. Setting a goal you can easily accomplish and slowly moving the goal a bit further each time is...well, success!

Good to hear other folks are still keeping tabs and making progress.

Also seeing from other people's posts that I need to add gaming goals to next year's resolutions.

I intended to finish painting all models which were just coated or nearly finished before starting with a new one. So far I have made good progress. Another resolution was to paint my second IK after watching Pacific Rim Part II. Now I have two painted IK and two which still need to be finished.
