Hi Guys,
As posted in my recent intro, I'm returning to the hobby after about 20 years away. I primarily played Warhammer FB with a Wood Elves army, around 2500 points, which I still have. They're showing their and my painting inadequacies from my youth, but I've spent a bit of time tidying them up recently. Now my 8 year old son is interested in getting into the hobby, and I've given him a few very old plastic models which I had in a 'bits box' from years ago - a few generic Empire archers/halbardiers and a few Chaos Warriors which might even be from a different game. He's practiced basic painting skills using these, and now he's now asking about collecting an army 'like daddy's'.

Problem is, while I'm aware of AoS, and have downloaded the rules and various publications, I really feel quite lost when trying to explain what various armies are available, and what the army options are these days. Believe me, I've tried my best looking online, but even the GW website doesn't seem to make it easy, with a lot of artwork and narrative, but seemingly precious little in the way of army and model photos of the various races. There are understandably many new races which I don't recognise, and mention of support for the 'old' races too, but does this mean that models for the races I'm familiar with (Empire, Bretonnia, Wood/High/Dark Elves, Dwarfs, Skaven, Chaos etc) are still available, or is this purely to allow support for people with old armies?

I can happily explain to him how the 'old world' worked, who the various armies were and all that... in fact I have been very tempted to buy a load of old models on Ebay and let my son build an army that way, perhaps even playing using the 4th/5th edition game rules with him... but eventually he'll come across other kids his own age who also play, and want to play against them, so really I want him to learn the current rules and terminology rather than my historical stuff!

So... can anyone point me to a basic resource where I can see how the game now works, in terms of actual models available for the various races, rather than the endless background narrative that's on the GW site? Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the background blurb, but really I'm more into the practicalities of game play and modelling. Also, how compatible are my old Wood Elves with the new rules? While they're technically supported by War Scrolls, do people actually still use their old armies these days? I also heard a rumour the model size is now slightly different with the current model range, is this true? As if so, I guess it means the old armies will look odd playing against newer, larger models.

Any help and advice appreciated!
Many thanks,
Ben

How to play aos vids, yes plenty of them. FB to AoS army transitions vids, i doubt they even exist.

But it aint that hard to find out.
First off GW has made some compenidums for old fantasy codex into aos battetomes but their content gets smaller and smaller for every update. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warhammer-Age-of-Sigmar-Rules

Secondly all units has a faction keyword in additon to their grand alliance keyword. aka, fantasy dwarfs are now dispossessed and ironweld arsenal in AoS. all this info are in the grand alliance books whit pictures of the actual model and there are 4 of them, order, chaos, destruction and death.
The old fantasy armys will moust likely not get any support other then the allegiance abilitys that you can find in the generals handbook(after all, it has been 4 years+ and they havent recived any new models) so GW is only fokusing on new stuff. That allso means some old fantasy units/armys are OOP and will not return, so if you cant find the fantasy unit on GWs webshop it is OOP.
