Why aren't there many games made for this genres?

So far only few are known to exists
1. Granado Espada (AKA Swords of the New World): Korean MMORPG game that still remains active after some TEN years. wide variety of firearms beginning from a basic matchlocks to flintlock muzzleloaders to Industrial era breechloaders to something as advance as .50 Sniper Rifle. also exists are two different classes of mages... Wizards and Warlocks.
2. Rise of Legends. three different races; Vinci was a good mix of Renaissance army with WW1 steampunk inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci, Alin which based on Arabian Nights (and associations of Magics to middle eastern worlds), the last was the Coatl... a Mesoamerican style of people who worshipped alien (and granted access to much of alien techs, without knowing that these aliens are malevolent to the settings)
And one game is announced. Greedfall

The setting is pretty much 1680.

Well for starters, if you are an american or british developer you'll probably take a crap-ton of flak for getting something wrong about a time period that is incredibly politically sensitive.

Assassin's Creed took a ton of flak for it's handling of the time period and it was a science fiction game about a hallucinating time-traveler going through his past lives.

Most games in this genre have been Korean.

Building a blood in water scent

The Dishonoured series is set in a very colonial-era reality. Flintlocks, bright uniforms, steam engines.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

Oh man, read the description for greedfall. It's more of that 'elves are so much better than stinking evil humans' crap. Avatar all over again.

Don't forget Fable 2 and Bloodborne!

It is a rather oddly untapped fantasy genre. Especially since there's some great fantasy books that deal with such settings.

I think it just comes down to a lot of people preferring their fantasy settings staying in a traditional medieval setting. It's usually pirate focused genres that push the concept.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

That's true to an extent BK, but I'd say Charger has a point as well - the "nyeeeh cultural appropriation nyeeeh that means you're basically as bad as the actual colonialists and also you're racist and bad and probably talk in the cinema nyeeeeh!" brigade likely have a chilling effect on anyone considering doing something with the period, because they know that that crowd are going to show up no matter how careful and sensitive they are.

I mean jeebus, apparently now even Civ is a tool of white neocolonialism or somesuch nonsense.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal
