Hey guys, I’m just starting Age of Sigmar and I’m trying to fill out my starter set to run 1000 points in matched play, can you let me know if this is any good?

Lord Arcanum on Gryph Charger - 240
- General
- Warlord Trait: Staunch Defender

2 x 5 Sequitors - 120
- 1 Greatmace
- Sequitor Prime with Greatmace

5 Paladin Retributors - 220
- 1 Starsoul Mace

3 Vanguard Raptors with Longstrike Crossbows - 180

Celestar Ballista - 100

Endless Spells - 20
Either Quicksilver Swords or Soulsnare Shackles (not sure yet)

Total: 1000 Points

My current plan is have the ballista and crossbows sit on backfield objectives, and march up the arcanum and Paladins together to make use of staunch defender, and keep sequitors alongside them. Thoughts?

Finally, I’m unsure of what artifacts or how many I can take on my general, is it one weapon and one artifact, or just one out of all of them? Also, lore wise my force resides in Ghyran, so are there any of those artifacts that you guys think stand out as awesome or above average?

Cheers, and thanks for reading!

Lets try to not make more chaos gods, ok guys?
I'd call this thread a trainwreck, but trainwrecks are legitimately horrifying to watch. This is hilarious.

TBH I didnt get to play with my new stormcast since 2nd hit the shelves, but heres my thoughts:

1st - In the few games of AoS I played I usually took 2 heroes even when playing 1k games. There is a scenario where only heroes can score, and only heroes can use command skills. My choice would be the knight incantator because she can auto-unbind a spell. Also, she comes with the box, so you should already have her.

2nd - IMHO retributors are plain worse than evocators. Evocators can also do mortal wounds, have the same defence, but they're cheaper and can be affected by your generals command skill. (Also come with the starter box set)

3rd - Castigators & the new ballista will do much mor for you than the vanguard raptors will. Remember all ballista hits will wound d6 times and the castigators can be targeted by your generals command skill. (Again, they come in the box)

4th - I am not sure on items/skills choice yet, but I will propably go with tempest lords, because they give you an extra command point on 4+ every turn, a helmet which lets you save your CPs on 5+, and your general gets +1 to wound when near other units. Also dont forget to give your mount a nice little bonus from the book.

Long story short: just play the starter box set -2 castigators, +2 evocators, +2 sequitors and you shoud have a good starter army.

I'm glad I read this thread! I am just getting into AoS and what Mickmann has said is my exact army (Tempest Lords and all). I think the starter box has some really strong units and a good base to start from too, which is nice.

I could finally try the new stormcast. Army list was basically what's in the box. I only used 2 of the Castigators as Evocator-proxies and 2 Liberators as Seqitor-proxies (to get to the required unit size).

Opponent played Seraphon. Here's my first thoughts on the starter-box army:

Lord Arcanum: Didnt get to do much in the 2 rounds the game went, as I managed to fail on all casting attempts :(

Knight Incantor: Managed to kill 5 saurus guard alone with spells. Surprisingly, my opponent didnt have any casters, but i think the auto-unbind-scroll can be a life saver.

Sequitors: Did you know great-maces hit more often when attacking deamons? Did you know seraphon are deamons? They managed to slay one of the big dinos and I only lost one of them.

Castigators: Died round 1 because of a teleporting seraphon hero on big dino. Whyy can lizards teleport one unit per turn, while stormcast cant :( ? Still, they are the cheapest unit and acted as a great bait. Will test them next time.

Ballista: Turn 1 - lizard hero on dino killst castigators, ballista shots him, two hits, which turn into 11 wound rolls. I guess I should get at least 3 of those nice little war machines

Evocators: WTF! I put them in reserve, so i couldnt cast their spell (turn 2 they failed), but I did manage to get them into melee with said dino-hero-lizard-guy. 21 attacks on 3+ that wound on 3+ are impressive already, but after your combat phase you get to roll 2 dice for each model in the unit, and on 4+ they do a mortal wound. Thats an average 5 mortals! They managed to get 4 regular wounds in, followed by 8 mortals. Both of us (opponent and me) were shocked how effective evocators are, and they're even cheaper than retributors. Next turn they killed a whole squad of saurus guard. Opponent conceded afterwards.

To make it short: ballista, sequitors and evocators rock!

Looking forward to my next game (and getting 2 more ballistas and 5 more evocators )

I'm trying to figure out how to employ the Castigators. The general consensus is that they aren't very good, but I really want to use them as some kind of strike force/character snipers. Unfortunately they don't do a heck of a lot of damage and with the new LOS rules their effectiveness is further reduced. I may just replace the 9 in my 1500pt list with 5 more Evocators & and Endless Spell or 10 more Sequitors to beef the units I have up. Or something completely different

Anyway, I'm glad your game went well, though I'm disappointed that your Lord Arcanum didn't do much. I hope in your next game you'll be able to do more with him!

Sequitors might be the optimal choice but I dont like em! Dirty robes and way too priestly! Respect on the Rets instead of Evocators!

Made some changes.

Compare Castigators to Judicators and they don't seem that bad. Then again they aren't battleline, so maybe they suck big time after all. Mine were mvp in a game against skaven, took 8 wounds off the big ratty daemon over a double turn, where my ballista whiffed twice
