Hi,

My friend recently started playing Tau after ditching his space wolves, And we just wanted to clear something up about for the greater good, so all units within 6" of the unit that is being charged can fire overwatch at the charging unit, Does the Tau player need to declare who will overwatch or can he do them 1 at a time?

He must declare them all at once, but yes, any number of units can use FTGG. This means if he announces a unit to FTGG, and they don't get to fire for whatever reason, they can't fire overwatch again that turn. You can't wait to see the result of the first overwatch to see if you're going to announce the others. Furthermore, because it's the opponents turn when you fire overwatch, the opponent gets to choose the order that your units fire overwatch, due to the sequencing rule.

However, the wording for FTGG is not very clear and could possibly be interpreted as only a single additional unit can fire. That's not the majority opinion (for what it's worth) and needs GW to fix things properly.

Units with the rule FTGG can support.

Now, I don't have the Tau book so I'm not sure which units actually have FTGG.

Could you go into a little more detail as to why they have to declare all the units they are FTGG ing?

I want to say it has something to do with the 'can fire as if they are a charge target' thing, but I am not too sure.

That's correct. 'For the Greater Good' only works "when an enemy unit declares a charge" and if the Tau player were to wait until after they had seen the result of a unit's Overwatch before deciding whether to use For the Greater Good it would no longer be "when an enemy unit declares a charge".
