In matched play, do the sub-factions of a battalion consisting of units from multiple factions need to be able to ally with each other for the battalion to be legal? I read that you use the battalion's allegiance for working out the faction of the units in the battalion, but I can't find that rule anywhere in the core rules or generals handbook, or the FAQs.

I am looking at using the Beastclaw Raider's battalion "Braggoth's Beast Hammer" which includes some Beastclaw units and also 2 units of Gore-Gruntas, which are Ironjawz units I believe. However, Ironjawz are not allies of Beastclaw Raiders per the GHB2018. So can I still take this battalion?

Thanks! Please reference the page number or FAQ paragraph where you see the rules as that's what I'm looking for to be able to show people, haha

anytime a unit is mentioned in a battalion from another faction it will become the allegiance of the battalion (this is mentioned right above the name of the battalion).

Taken from the designer's notes on the core rule book page 6.

Q: The rules say that a warscroll battalion can include allies
and that they don’t count against the number of allies in the
army. Does this rule only apply to battalions that share the
same allegiance as the army, but that have units from two
different factions (a battalion in a Daughters of Khaine army
that has Daughters of Khaine and Stormcast Eternals units,
for example)?
A: Yes. The faction a warscroll battalion belongs to is
shown on its warscroll, above the title of the battalion.
In addition, the battalion is assumed to belong to the
Grand Alliance that its faction is a part of. Warscroll
battalions that share the same allegiance as an army
can always be taken as part of the army, and if they
include any allied units, these units do not count against
the limits on the number of allies the army can have
(or against the points limit that can be spent on allies
in a Pitched Battle). An army can include a warscroll
battalion of a different allegiance to the rest of the
army, but if it does so the units in it do count against the
limits on the number of allies the army can have (and
the points for the battalion and the units in it count
against the points limit that can be spent on allies in a
Pitched Battle).

Thanks, that almost answers it. But this FAQ/Commentary is referring to a warscroll battalion that includes allies. The one I am looking at includes 2 factions that are not allies of each other, just part of the same grand alliance. Can I still take that battalion? Like are you allowed to take units from different factions in matched play even if they aren't "allies."

I think you can, you would just lose your allegiance trait since you would be a "grand alliance" army instead of a specific faction. So my question is, if you take a battalion that has 2 factions which can't ally with each other, do you still get your allegiance traits and stuff?

Thanks for your help!

Two factions that aren't allies brings the army under the general Grand Alliance rules. You wouldn't be allowed an allegiance. Without an allegiance you can't take traits and things besides your general Grand Alliance ones...but are there even any battalions for general order, death, destruction, or chaos? Pretty sure they all fall under specific allegiances.

Sisters and Wolves 4000
~4000 points of Skaven
~2000 Kaptain Gitklaw's Grots
~2400 Kharadron Overlords
4x Imperial Knights
