Hello,
would it be very incorrect to use XVI on a ultramarine dreadnought? Would it have any meaning?
Thanks!

Well it's not a legion number, or a company number.....and it seems a bit high to be a planet's number, but if you can come up with another reason.

I think dreads technically have chassis numbers like tanks, but they never really use them as they use their names. But they could have them.

Well. We know the organization of some companies. But now after the return of Guilliman some things changed. More squads and also reserves. No problem with the number of the Dreadnought

Dreadnoughts are usually* numbered within a company, so a XVI would denote the 16th Dreadnought of that company which is.. rather excessive, but not impossible: Under current fluff everything including marines adopt the markings of the company to which they are attached - the Ultramarine 2nd Company shown in the current codex has 12 squads but the 11th & 12th squads are stated to be from the 6th and 8th companies respectively. Referring back to the old Strategic Disposition of the Ultramarines Chapter from 3rd edition (which is still a go-to source as it's the only source for a lot of numbers) the Ultramarines reserve companies had 19 Dreadnoughts between them, so it is theoretically possible for a company to have had that many on a temporary basis, although you'd need to justify where the other Dreadnoughts are if you don't have that many.. (maybe the massed-Dreadnought operation was some years in the past, but the pilot or techmarine decided to retain the incorrect number to commemorate the rare event and it's participation in it)
* there are two Dreadnoughts shown in the aforementioned 2nd Company spread in the current codex, the text accompanying the first states that the numerals (as per previously established canon) denote is being the second dreadnought attached to the second company, the second dreadnought has the exact same numeral but the author chose to ignore the issue entirely..

Do it. It could be a number of significance to the occupant pre internment. Squad numbers in companies seem to be a free for all after the editing of codex (roboutes editing). As they attach units numbers go up. So stick it on. Rule of cool. If it looks good you can make it work.

if you want a good high roman numeral, go with XIII.
In fact I have a hunch now that I think of it that XVI is proably seen as a number of "ill regard" among space marines.

Yea, XVI was the black legion before the heresy.. so I think I will adapt with some paint strokes that XVI transfer I've put without thinking. It's possible to explain a story, but inside myself I wouldn't be sure if I could trust that dreadnought...

might be able to with some careful brush stroke make that XVI look like a XIII with some battle damage chipping the paint.
