I'm considering starting AoS to mix things up a bit from my usual 40k stuff, but I'm not sure what army I should get. Looking at all the models on GW's site, the two that appeal to me most are Gutbusters and Brayherd/Warherd; but neither have a start collecting box and, from what I've been told, are just kind of neglected in general. Is the neglect significant enough that I would be better off starting something else? The Khorne and Slaves to Darkness stuff all looks pretty good. Someone has recommended Ironjawz since I'm interested in Ogors. Also, while they also don't have Start Collecting boxes, a mixture of Clan Verminus and Clan Skryre looks kinda cool too.

While I don't know much about rules wise, you are correct in the two armies you listed are "legacy" armies. They can be used and warscrolls for them but ARE NOT SUPPORTED.

If you want up to date, then you will need an army that has a battletome. If you do like Gutbusters how does Beastclaw Riders look for you? They are basically the same minis without single giants/orgers (sorry forget the proper name) but you can ally the single giants/ogers in them. So is that an option for you? You will have a battletome book and use the some of the minis you asked for.

As for Brayherd they are still usable but don't have a battletome. Not sure how good they are. I think they are still good you just don't have any specific spells or relics or what ever they are called for them. At least the rules are free for them. You might need the General's Handbook 2018 to get the points for them. Can't remember if anything else in there is for them. I am sure someone will have an answer for you.

Also what is your play style? Do you want magic? Do you want summoning? Those are other things to consider as well.

Hope this helps a bit.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Hey, and welcome to the world of fantasy battles. My suggestion is that start with core book and generals handbook 18, from those you can simply decide which army appeals most, and check from the generals handbook if they have updated rules and points. Next thing is to buy battletome and grand allegiance book for the army you pick, and start planning your army to collect. Then its up to you what miniatures you collect.

Khorne and ironjaws are great combat bashers, and have great army rules. I've been also intrested about them.
Skaven can be cool, although they might not be that great in combat.
Beastmen have their ability to outflank into enemy deployment zone, so if youre looking for tactics, they might be your choice.
Ogres, well, I've been tempted also by them, they are durable, hit hard, and have great magic from butchers.
