Today I wanted to discuss the recently announced Third Edition of Malifaux, specifically my thoughts on it, and most importantly, how it impacts you!

Loss of one of the three masters I play (Ramos) sucks. A stupid move from Wyrd.

Rasputina seems to be getting a different playstyle, her minons now turn into pillars to reflect her magic through, instead of being able to do that all the time and exploding when they die. I'm not sure this sounds like a change for the better.

And the dreamer has grown into an emo teenager!

So not great on that front, but the streamlining of the rules sounds alright. Most of the issues I have come from the forced naritive progression.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

I feel like I just rebought a mountain of cards for our big collection... i'm just not in the mood to do it again. I feel like Wyrd goes through rules rewrites very quickly... I know its not the case, but it somehow feels like Version 2 wasn't even done yet.

Really love Malifaux, not sure i want a "simpler" version of it. But I like that its just cards and rules and can still use my old models especially for the RPG which I absolutely love.

Mostly excited. But a bit worried.
A lot like how I felt about 1st=>2nd.

Quite happy with the idea of simplifying (which means I might actually get some games in again) and encouraging thematic play, but I think that removing model options (entirely, and from factions) is a terrible idea, for maintaining customer relationships.

agree with the former and the latter. I do look forward to how they go about this and the rules, however, as my son has a small painted crew.

I get the visceral reaction people have to removing options, but rationally speaking, this happens all the time in other ways. Honestly, one of my biggest gripes with Malifaux is just the sheer volume of models that aren't really options due to the game's tendency to reward independent strength over synergy. There tends to be so little design space that every new releases results in a good chunk of options "removed" and that isn't even including the 2-3 model packs for a game that rarely ever demands one. I'm 100% half full on this stuff in the assumption that a game in which changing masters demands changing crews will result in a game where I have a lot more real options than theoretical ones.

I've long felt that M2E was built on a cracked foundation. It was a beautiful home, but anything added caused the whole thing to lean, making the entire edition feel like it was constantly in a state of repair. Ultimately the big gripe I have with it is what the keyword hiring is looking to address. M2E was built on a kind of "all models for all Masters" logic that never really gave players much motivation to take anything but the best 5-6 models from their faction. That was.... okayish when M2E launched with a subset of the models about on par with the initial launch of the game, but it meant that by the second book it had already eaten up its design space and put itself right back in the place 1.5 had grown into that needed a new edition in the first place.

Edition changes are largely about taking everying you've added to the game and rethinking it into a new cohesive whole while also making sure you have room to expand until you have another opportunity to clean house. M2E really failed to do that and put the game in position where every minor balance issue kind of dominated the game until it was addressed. Honestly, I found it shared a lot of the same problems X-Wing experienced and some of that definitely comes from the "upgrade patch" mindset that both were born in. It was still a huge improvement over the 1st edition and a great game, but the stuff they're talking about for M3E is stuff the game has really needed for years now.
