First of I am not asking for point costs or illegal books or anything like that. I am seeing if I have enough without buying anymore if I can. I was going to go all in with Kill Teams, but I am missing the "fantasy" feel of the game so I am excited to get the Soul Wars boxset. I didn't think I would be able to get it but life was in my favour and now I have it. I am also getting Kill Team boxset as well. So that basically leaves me with no extra money now for 2 $50 battle tomes for the minis in the Soul Wars box set. Rather have minis I don't have than a book.

I do have the General's Handbook 2018. I also have the first Age of Sigmar box set and a starter set of Malignant from last year before 2.0 came out. So I am guess I have a good sized army to put together now. Not having the battle tomes for either army, I am not sure of what to make. I haven't looked at the box yet so I may only be able to make it one way so the point is moot then. I don't plan on getting any more minis yet until I finish these minis first. So I only plan to use what I already have. What I really like to know is what is the play style for both armies. I want to make sure if I do buy a battle tome that it will be the correct one.

With what I have, do I have a fun army without the battle tome for now? I guess I would be missing out on artifacts or formations, but that is ok. Do I have the points in the books I have, or is the battle tome needed? Maybe I can use the AoS army maker for the points? I am not sure if it's valid. Anyone have a link for it?

I am also asking if you play one or both of these armies what is your play style and why. I want to see what might appeal to me and then start making those minis and then get the battle tome if it's too my liking.

Going to start reading the Core Book now but love to see your opinions and excitement and why.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Thats the GW warscroll builder. You should be able to run your models through that to see how much you have.

Thank you for the link Auticus. Good to know I can game without spending anymore money at the moment.

What are the play styles of the full armies? I think I forgot to say the entire army not just the minis I have. This way I can see if I want to collect the entire line or not.

Stormcast are space marines. They can be anything you want them to be. Cavalry heavy, shooty heavy, shock troop heavy, mage heavy. They have everything.

Not sure about the other though.

Things that you missing out without the SCE battle tome:

-> Prayers. Your priest is nice, however, he gets another prayer from the list.
-> Scions of the storm. Deep strike, this one is rather big, considering SCE are rather slow with specialised elements.
-> Storm host. Chapter tactics, in most cases not really a big deal but Hammers of Sigmar and Anvils of Heldenhammer are rather nice. Hammers are sort of a no brainer, if you're running Vandus as his abilities are written for that particular host.
-> Spells. Various flavours of mortal wound generation, nothing exciting, except for few buffs that Evocators can cast, just because reasons...
-> You're not missing on battalions or SC artefacts.

So far my impression of the SC is that the army is rather slow, flexible, self contained, few specialised units (mostly in how well they can remove other units) without any wild synergy combos.

nighthaubt is about stacking buffs, and making your units perform better by leveraging mobility, your sticking power and mortal wounds. Typically you’ll have a hard time against chaff, but do wonders vs armies with high rend values and expensive troops with nice saves.
