Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Welcome to the 42nd round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge! For the unfamiliar, the challenge is a friendly competition open to any Dakka members, whether you're painting your first model or your 1001st! The more rounds you enter, the more points you accrue based on a public vote, and these are tracked in a League Table over the course of the year.

This month, the theme is Above and Beyond, focusing on the veteran, the elite of your armies, the troops dispatched on the most dangerous missions, wielding the deadliest weapons, displaying the most impressive skills on the battlefield. Whether that's some all-guns-blazing shock troops, a sneaky squad of infiltrators or anything else that stands apart from the rank and file is up to you, though the focus is elite soldiers rather than commanders.

How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of August and will end at midnight BST on the 31st of August. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Going to be another short month, but I’m going to try to get these inceptors done.

Gonna see if I can get at least one of these three done, possibly all three, Basti hero and two Duelists from Wargods of Aegyptus.

Edit: now with actual picture!

Good luck to everybody this month, getting great inspirado to keep working on my command squad. I'm entering the 2nd Company Champion, whose literal job it is is to fight stronger people than him to the death with an awful statline

I'm at work so again i'll post the same proof as last month on top of my actual proof pic from last night, which I suppose is kind of illegal - the point is that i'm leaving myself open to do other vets in the squad if i have time. I understand that the pic is old but I hope it's clear enough that the standard bearer is the only miniature that got any work last month and he took up all my time! Hope this is okay

My entry for this competition

Blood Raven’s Honour Guard
Before you I present to you today are 5 members of my chapter’s Honour Guard. At top left, Ra Adrastus, Captain of the Honour Guard and Chapter Champion, succeeding Apollo Diomedes in the role. Known as the Victor of the Helios War, he wields the traditional blade of his office, The Stalwart Blade of Champions, and the Artificer Armour Holy Mantle of Elizur, blessed by the legendary Blood Raven Chaplain.
Beside him, Brother-Ancient Ramses carries the banner of the chapter into battle. Clad in the finest armour known as Merciless Truth, and carrying a relic sword known as Azrael’s Second. Hewn from black steel, it was rumoured to be a sister sword to Azrael’s Sword of Secrets.
Below, from left to right, Honoured Brothers Isilur, Balrim and Senrial. Isilur and Senrial both wield the finest axes and the wear the most decorated armour to reflect their status as long serving members of the Honour Guard. Brother Balrim is the newest recruit, moved up from First Company to replace the losses from the chapter’s civil war. With many of the Honour Guard choosing loyalty to Kyras over the Imperium, the Blood Raven’s honour guard were left severely depleted. He wields a masterfully made Boltgun that he has carried for over 300 years, and a power sword, a gift from First Captain Leonidas upon his promotion.

Update: Unfortunately Brother Balrim will no longer be joining the revered honour guard. This is in part due to my bitz supplier being out of stock with the remaining parts I need. Therefore, my entry will consist solely of the 4 metal models shown above.

A Protoss colony world

I'm perhaps later joining this party than I would like, but this month I thought I'd say "And now for something completely different". In honor of the upcoming re-launch of Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game (now called Middle-Earth SBG), I thought I'd paint up a unit from that game from my old collection. I had to try to figure out an elite unit to fit the month's theme, and really the only thing I could come up with was these metal Easterling Kataphrakts. Here's the proof pic showing that two are primed from years ago and the other three are newly assembled and thus not primed:

I figure heavy cavalry could be considered fairly elite, and it gives me an excuse to paint up some Easterlings. They had the best looking armor in the LotR movies hands down; it's a shame they only actually appear in one scene in the second movie.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

It's time to paint some more Infinity minis.

Gonna do Tunguska starter pack.

Also here are several bases I made from Kato clay and various plastic profiles. For the top texture I've used Green stuff world's rolling pins (amazing tool).

No problem! I have quite a few of them and I must say they are amazing for bases, walls, ground and so on. Also very easy to work with,
you just have to use the right clay/material. Highly recommend.
