I was curious about something. What happens to a titan if it's the last remaining titan of its legio? Say some titan vs titan combat happens or whatever and only a single titan is able to survive the skirmish, would it be absorbed into another legio? Would the Adeptus Mechanicus remake the legio? Or could they go solo sort of like a free blade, assuming they still had the personnel to maintain such a machine. Does anyone know of such occurrences?

Also, what are some good Titan books? I know of Titanicus but that's it

War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts

Unlike a knight house, which only has so many suits and is dependent on others' charity to get more, a Titan Legion is generally based on a Forge World which is capable of making good its losses (over time). Equally, a titan legion doesn't draw from a single genetic bloodline like a knight house, so you can't 'wipe them out' in the same way like you can a knight house or astartes chapter.

The mechanicum would most likely refound the legio. A sole surviving engine might become the core of the legion, but might be transferred instead - although whilst we've seen titan princeps 'traded' we've never seen the engines themselves.

Other good books are mechanicum (horus heresy), Warlord, Imperator, Titan: God Machine (a graphic novel)

I think it’s entirely possible that you could get the last Titan from a legion behaving like a free blade. Say it’s the last one and it’s forge world is destroyed or over run. I know they would normally rep our pose it into another legion but there are always ways to fluff it out and make it work. Although in this situation it might struggle to move between worlds. They need a lot of support.

I’d also add Titanicus by Dan Abnett to that list of books.

Here's another question, I read somewhere that Titans have their own psuedo-personalities due to the strength of their machine-spirit, if this is true, do you think that being the last surviving member could have an affect on it?

Titans are different than knights. While knight households are more or less independent and have sworn loyalty to the imperium (or the mechanicus), Titans are intrinsically part of the adeptus mechanicus and answer to them. They are more akin to a tank company of the Astra Militarium or a space marine chapter...they could revolt/turn to chaos, but aren’t just going to go off and do their own thing.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I don’t think the ad mech would allow a lone Freeblade Titan to wander around, more likely the Titan would be absorbed by another Titan legion.

I think making a Titan the last surviving of its Legio would definetly have an affect on its machine spirit. In particular it might become hyper aggressive and resistant to commands if it came into contact with similar forces that wiped the rest of the Legio.

Remember that the Titans aren't the only parts of a Titan Legio. There's going to have a metric ton of support personnel, vehicles (especially recovery vehicles), and so on. Plenty of Titans 'killed' on the battlefield are going to be recovered and refurbished rather than abandoned. The last Titan still on its feet might find its Princeps at promotion though.

Not to mention the extra-special AdMech heavy dropships that ferry them to the ground from orbit, and back up. For a Titan to go "free" would require that thousands of support personnel do so too, taking all their equipment, vehicles, stores and the insanely rare drop ships with them. The Forge World would want all it's stuff back, including the Titan that most certainly does not belong to it's Princeps. No sanctioned IoM warp transport would take them along unless all papers were A-OK.

But in 40k everything is possible. A Rogue Trader with a large enough ship (to carry the Titan dropship) could see a use for a Titan of his own, but otherwise I don't see any way a "free" Titan could ever get off planet. The last standing Titan of a Legion (and it's Princeps) could ofc easily set themself up as the big stick on whatever planet they were on. It might be centuries before a relief force arrives so why not do some damage as an example, then enjoy the tithes the locals bring you for not waking up Old Grumpy?

You could always have a free Titan talking some civilian traders into carrying them if they have a big enough ship. I'd bet a Titan would keep pirates away very well.

I think a more likely scenerio then a "Free" titan, would be a titan serving detached service as part of a crusade group, or along side a rogue trader. etc. Such as if a Rogue trader recovered an STC, a forge world may offer the services of a Titan and it's support for a duration of a century in exchange for it. Not sure how accurate to the lore that is but it sounds right

I'm pretty sure I've seen stuff where even companies of Astartes can be seconded to a Rogue Trader for sufficient fee. Probably a great way to keep the Chapter supplied with bolter shells and serfs.

This ^^^

There’s stories of titans gettin really agressive machine spirits from defeats or the destruction of others in it legion. A whole legion being wiped out could send it bonkers. Which is a story arc in its self. A lone crazy Titan, last of its legion with the crew and support staff left trying to reign it in. Like wise the back lash into the crew could also send them bonkers or unstable.

It’s 40k and a story of your models so you could easily fluff it out where you end up witha singke Titan acting alone with no legion. The galaxy is a big place. Stuff gets lost and forgotten about. It’s legiin could’ve been destroyed and it was left thought dead too. Longer term support and transport becomes an issue. But insurmountable. A lot of the entourage of a Titan is ceremonial. Most of what’s needed to make it work is onboard I like the idea so far.

Another reason for a rogue Titan could be that it has literally gone rogue. Machine spirit corrupted or full of rage or crew just dissolutionsed so it detached fro its legion and goes it alone. Not renegade or chaos but it would still be hunted by its old legion. Trying to get it back. Other imperial forces would be suspicious but most wouldn’t turn down a titans help. Again logistics plays a part but with a big enough war zone it could work easily.

A titan takes way too much support to go freeblade. They'd need not only the technical knowhow of the Adeptus Mechanicus, but the materials of the Imperium just to keep their titan operational or to even transport it between systems.

About the only group that could offer those kind of resources beside the Imperium, would be the forces of Chaos or an otherwise renegade SM chapter. Tau would probably be happy to have a titan helping them out, but I doubt they'd have the technical knowhow to maintain it.

Additionally, a titan princep is one of the most honorific positions available in the Adeptus Mechanicus. Even if its forgeworld was destroyed, the princep would probably make any effort possible to join up with the next closest.

I'm not sure even a renegade space marine chapter would have the kind of resources nesscary to maintain a titan. even chaos titans are associated with a traitor titan legion

Your game and fluff only have to take part in a snap shot of time. Each Titan group sent to a warxone does so with all the support it needs for that time. So if freeblade in that war zone it would have support for a time at least. As for princeps there is plenty of fluff about them being rogue or bonkers or both. So a lone Titan could easily remain in war zone for a period and continue fighting. That period could easily be decades given 40k scale resupply lines. Would it be able to turn up on random worlds and fight all over, I doubt it. But it makes more sense for a solo Titan to keep fighting where it is than to try and get off world to join another legion.
