I am trying to build a ton of lists from my, and my wife's collection to bring to demo days, etc. We've got a lot of interest going on, and after touting the games (generally) balanced nature, I want to be able to field any questions about outliers.

I've been away from even the pretense of competitive SBG for some time, but are any lists out there no-nos?

I had some concern my newly ordered Iron Hills Dwarves might need to stay home for a while. Near army-wide Def 8 or 9 seems like a frustrating game for many opposing lists... at least on paper.

I've heard Ranger spam is not fun, and from experience I know Watcher of Karna spam can be a little unpleasant.

Not easy to say...
Probably a list with 3 nazguls on fell beasts, morannon orcs, a troll and a ghost should be considered nasty at least...

And those flying monster circus lists will almost certainly go away with the new edition.

I can see them borrowing a bit of Age of Sigmar, in having maximum numbers of say "Monsters" at various point-sizes, or perhaps ala Kings of War, only unlocking one monster "slot" per full warband of basic warriors.

There are some models that might be considered poor sportsmanship - things like dropping in Shades, or using Alfrid.
Don't get me wrong here, It's not like you automatically become TFG for playing one of them, necessarily, but often it is the case that people only add them into a list to take advantage of their rules. Which is fine, if you just want to win, but I personally would question the use of Alfrid outside of a laketown list, or the shade outside of an Angmar list. Oh, and in my opinion, Tom Bombadil should really only be used for scenario play - his rules aren't designed to be "fair" in a normal points match game.

Watchers of Karna are another unit that are simply undercosted, and seeing as they're a complete GW invention, it's hard to justify why they are so good. Same with Corsair reavers - an extra attack and higher fight for a negligible points increase, really screws with balance.

There are other things that are frowned upon - giving all your warriors axes to take advantage of their special strikes is considered a bit of a dick move, for example.

The "axe problem" will be fixed with new army books: you will find specific equipmeny for every miniatures.

Which is a very good thing, in my view. And it's a pretty simple fix, so hopefully that little problem will be killed off without any other issues popping up.

Adam told me at Warhammerfest that the axe rule will change to +1S/-D3 defense. You can still equip all units with every weapon, but every model comes with a range of weapons in their profile, say Orcs come with sword and pick, and if you want to equip them with weapons that are not in their profile you'll have to pay 1point.

Also, heroes and such list exactly what they are armed with. no more Galadriels with axes
