I am eager to acquire, through purchase, a one Age of Sigmar Slaves to Darkness set. However, I wish to replace the circular bases with their original square counterparts, so I can rank those mofos. You understand? I need to know WHICH SIZE BASE I would need to mount the Chaos Mauraders AND those Chaos Warriors. Not sure if they use the smaller ones or maybe those larger ones one might base orcs on. And then I will conquer the world and you will end up as slaves for my amusement.

YOU WILL TELL ME NOW!

Wow even the Mauraders? I haven’t seen these in person, are the figures bigger than your normal human or is it because of their positions waving their weapons around.

They are big and in a wide stance, probably pretty close to Orcs in size.

Yep, one of the things 6th Edition did was unify Chaos with base sizes. All infantry are on 25mm, Minotaurs and same size units 40mm, Dragons and the like on 50mm.

They didn't do that with Orcs and Goblins, mainly because no Orc would sully himself to join a Gobbo regiment. Lizardmen are also split size, but they have corresponding characters to both infantry types.

Yeah hahaha I remember the cursing of a buddy of mine who had to rebase all of his Chaos Marauders from 20mm to 25mm.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Chaos Marauders are also loose ranked troops being irregular barbarian infantry, So 25mm bases make sense.

One of the nice things you can do is add mounted models into chaos warrior blocks. for the traditional image of heavily armoured warriors some on foot some mounted all massed together, which has long be a staple of fantasy art. Its as simple as one knight model counts as two chaos warriors on foot.

It may be a good idea to do this because you get lots of knights in the Slaves to Darkness boxsets, and knights are a bitch to rank up. Using excess knights as unit fillers makes good use of them.

I think this an outstanding, great idea.

If you ever do so,
please post some pictures here.

Chaos infantry have been on 25mm bases for as long as I remember - since 3rd edition at least. The only exception would be things like goblins, skaven, chaos dwarves, dark elves, etc (back when they were part of the Chaos "mish-mash") and Ungors which appeared in the 6th edition list.

For example, these guys, who are as low-level and scrotey as it gets in a 3rd edition Chaos army:

Marauders were on 20mm bases in 5th at the very least. The DOW unit was never upgraded to 25mm with the plastics.

Marauders and the small beastmen were on 20mm.

I have a unit of Chaos Knights, I normally use them as Knights, but they do count as unit fillers easily enough. It makes more sense for them to be in all the ranks including the front, has that fantasy horde vibe.

My chaos knights needed a lot of help with basing to rank up, some were set forwards, some back, some built up or given rearing steeds. All in all it means my knights do rank up, adn I dont need a specific combination or order to do so, though some particular knights dont fit alongside each other. But the price is that I have ac single rank only, which I never minded and the forward and back set knights don't fit as unit fillers.

If you place Chaos knights squarely on their bases with the sollerets of the riders around the halfway point they won rank up at all, but they will fit neatly into units as unit fillers so long as they are interspaced with warriors. I got rid of most of my excess knights before I found this out. So perhaps I am not the best person to ask.

If you collect chaos and start with two Slaves to Darknes sets, which ias a good call IMHO you can do some major ocnverting around and playing with bases to make a unit of 5-8 single ranked knights, the rest of the knights can be based squarely as unit fillers. Thus two Slaves to Darkness will yield:

Two sorcerers
Two chariots
Unit of 6 Chaos Knights (about the right number).
Unit of 28 Chaos Warriors (including four knights as proxy for eight warriors).

If you add a Chaos Lord blister to this (which IMHO is best converted into a BSB) then you will have

Unit of Six Chaos Knights
Unit of fifteen Chaos warriors including BSB and Sorcerer Lord general (inc two knights as filler)
Unit of fifteen Chaos Warriors (inc two knights as filler)
Chariot
Chariot
Loose sorcerer.

That is a workable start to a Chaos Warriors army. From there I would start adding boxsets and when you have enough warriors to not use proxies convert two of your proxy knights into a mounted hero and sorcerer and discard the other two..

He should be glad they weren't Ungor, which went from 20's to 25's and then BACK to to 20's.

...Thanks to this thread, I realized the Ungors i bought some years ago are based on 25mm bases and the system I play says base size is 20mm... NOOOOO

I wasn't even considering that they could've rebased them to 20s... Haven't paid much attention to this when I was playing against Beastmen in recent years. My opponent used to play them as skirmishers with short bows only.

Ungors were more flexible, earlier editions had beastment with ungors as literal unit fillers. You chose what you defended with, if you took hits as gors you had to loose gors, took hits as ungors you lose more but only olose ungors. You would have a mixed formation of gors in front and ungore behind. Ungors could have spears while gor had extra hand weapons for maximum attacks. As ungor were cheap you could take a lot of them and bulk the unit up, wheras the front line of gors did the main fighting. It was a decent way of getting the unit to compete against better lists by comboing two subpar units into one workable hole.

Later the idea was discontinued and ungors moved back to 20mm.

Yes, you are right. I remember vaguely that a friend of mine played a mixed unit of gors and ungors, were the Ungors gave some additional, supportive attacks with spears.

Damn I am getting old.
