So, I've picked up the Idoneth Deepkin character, Lotann, Warden of The Soul Ledgers, he who is shushed by a librarian cephalopod.

What I want to do with him is use him as a High Elf mage/archmagi and put him in a unit of Seaguard (all on square bases of course). They are the IoB models.

Now, looking at the box he seems to be on a Terminator sized round base so switching him to a little square elf base might leave him quit cramped and that octopus, which is a great selling point on the model doesn't seem very rank friendly. I'm thinking that the options best to worse are: Put him on a swirly magical platform so he is tall enough to fit into the unit, reposition the octopus (possibly raising it with a flying stand, or a standard pole), omit the octopus and use it for something else.

Has anyone already done this? Any other ideas?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Not done this and if you haven bought him may I suggest you rethink. Isharann Soulscryer makes a nice elven mage and is far less of a problem to convert.

You can simply assemble it without the fish. I also suggest you omit the large basin on his waist.

Looking carefully at the Lotann model there is a tentacle running across his back which you would have to remove without wrecking the underlying detail. This woud take some skill to do.

The Isharann Tidecaster also shows promise. It isd only lightly connected to any fish and could be rebased as a water priestess easily enough.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

It would certainly be an easier fit, but part of the reason I want to use this model is because it looks really great, one of the first AoS models I've actually liked.

Put him on a 40x40 square, and use it as a mage + 3xRnF filler, and keep spare models (including another mage on a 20x20) when you have to remove casualties.

That way your unit will look awesome 90% of game time. No conversion needed.

The only way you can fit him on a 20x20 is using the platform trick, and even then make sure to weigh down the base because the thing's gonna be tall. There are tons of underwater-looking columns on aquarium stores you can have a look at.

That rank filler idea could work out nicely. I could even get a second version of him and clip the octopus tentacle off of that one so he can look cool at the start and then be practical later on.

Cant argue with that.

Take a good look at the sprue on websites. Fount what I was looking for right here on Dakka!

Zoom in and look at the main body of the miniature and judge for yourself whether you can remove the tentacle or convert it into something without ruining th model.

Here is the front side for good measure. If you can remove the back tentacle and tidy up the tentacle tip on the scroll you can free up this model. Methinks you will have best chances if you convert the tentacle on the back into a sash. If you do remove the tentacle and can assemble the entire ctopus and mount him separately you will have an excellent cthuloid mage, you could attach a body at the neck body under the octopus head and create an elder Illithid or something for RPG's. Two miniatures for one.
