So the announcement is Wolves vs GSC but the article image is a Wolf and a Plague Marine.

Guess even when announcing Xenos we need to only show off the Marines?

Snark aside, hopefully we start seeing some hints about Orks soon. I'm still assuming rumors about needing additional playtesting for balance to be true because it makes the most sense considering GW's current track record for 8th. It does suck for anyone who wanted them to be out now, but I'll always agree with a product delay for quality's sake.

You realize if that rumour would be true then it would have to delay the ork codex for months? At which point the GW announcement of next two codexes would be false...

Sheesh. Why believe that rumour when alternative is simpler. Orks come normally after wolves so pre order within few weeks.

We don't know when the initial playtesting was done, nor when the additional playtesting was/is completed. It could have been finished back when the announced the "soon" leaving us with the current release schedule with Orks coming after the Wolves (and possibly the GSC).

The rumor would account for why Orks didn't drop during the wave of other Xenos books and why they spent so much time waiting despite not really being slated for a massive model release as far as any rumor has claimed. Since we're not waiting because of a mass model release, that leaves us waiting for rules reasons.

I really doubt this rumour. The playtest version of the Necrons codex was leaked, and SERIOUS typos and errors carried through to release (Deathmarks and Lychguard in the troops section, lol) and was ONLY later changed in the big fat FAQ.

Necrons can't break the game by dropping basically an entire horde army in your face turn one though (based on rumors at least).

a simplier explination is that GW wants some good strong armies for the late summer/early autum period. Orks and Genestealer cults are pretty much the CLASSIC space Marine baddies.

In fact let's move that a bit forward, we know rogue trader is coming out, could GW be purposefully trying to get a "classic old skool rogue trader" vibe by timing Orks and GSCs to come shortly before rogue trader?

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

It's all just rumours though and if anything about this SW timing and codex has shown it's that we should never believe rumours.

Yes, this is true but the real reason why Orks don´t show up is that they are ashamed of themselves? Why? Well, in the past they were led by the biggest Ork and nowadays it is the smallest grot. Brave new green world!

I'm honestly a little surprised that big daddy Russ is nowhere to be seen. It would have been a good reason to delay the wolves codex this long.

It's a little promising that they going to have such a quick turnaound from announcement to release. Hell, Orks in September seems plausible now.

They were likely delayed because I have a feeling this new planet is going to play a big role in the story. So they needed to have the gsc models ready for mass production.

Then orks might not get anything but could playa big partnin the story in their codex so they didn't want to spoil it or something. Thisnis my new theory.

Tentatively excited.

I'm not expecting wondrous things, or to be skyrocketed to the top of the pile, but it'll be neat to see what unique strategems we get.

Fundamentally, we pretty much know what all the unit profiles and statlines are going to be, since most of it is the same as other marine stuff. And we can't edge out the Blood Angels. But it will be neat to see what fun things we can do.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Thunderwolf Cavalry and Wolf Lords on Thunderwolves are essentially very similar - battlefield role, wise - to Custode Bike Captains and Vertus Praetors. As those are the two best units (at the moment) in the SW codex, aside from the flying coffin, we'll have to see what GW does here. I doubt anything will supplant Custodes as the primary soup choice for IG players.

That said, the quality of space wolves will be defined by their stratagems. Most likely outcome:

Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf

Custodes Bike Captain
Custodes Bike Captain
Custodes Bike Captain

The rest imperial guard

Will probably be the norm.

Classic! If you were planning on gaming that day - I would instead schedule a vacation - this release is sure to bring out the wolf pack!

The thing is that Dawneagles are M14" and have hurricane bolters and FLY, while Thunderwolves are M10" and still have to hack through guardsmen when they get there.

More relevantly, Captain Smash, Death Company, and Sanguinary Guard are M12 and have strategems to make a vanguard move, re-deploy as if deep striking, and near guarantee a charge. In addition Blood Angels get real scouts, while ours get outflank instead of infiltrate.

Unless we get something really, really good out of left field, I think BA will still be strictly better than us.

That's essentially my point in regards to Dawn Eagles - they're all around better at being space wolves than space wolves.

It will come down to stratagems. Maybe Space Wolves will be able to Charge->Fight->Kill->Space Wolf Soulburst->Charge->Fight. This would immediately make them very good. I would also imagine they get a way to get a more guaranteed charge out of Outflank. So if you drop in outflank style maybe you get +2" to the charge.

There is a lot they can do to make space wolves appealing, and it revolves around tactics and stratagems.

We already know Wulfen will get a specific stratagem. Well, we don't know that, people Grey Knights Paladins got nothing.

I could see the space wolves taking on a more straight forward and less gimmicky approach to melee as opposed to Blood Angels. I don't see them having a smash captain or having the deep striking death company bombs, but a more slow, but consistent approach. Perhaps some stratagem to let a unit disembark after a vehicle moves (Iron Wolves style), move after outflank, or counter charge a charging unit. I like to see space wolves being more of an all around short range shooty army with some counter punch backed by dedicated melee units (thunderbang cavalry and wulfen).

I assume its because Genestealers have been the main image on the community page for over two months now due to Kill Team.

I don't see how space wolves could be less gimmicky. The army is a gimmick.

I lol'd at that because you are absolutely right. I was thinking so purely about gameplay I forgot that the army is literally a gimmick.
