Hello there. I need some advice on how to paint the cloth for my Tempestus Scions. I want to go for a dark red look and normally would start with a Khorne red and then apply shades and apply layers of lighter red to orange highlights. But for this I would like to try something different and hopefully improve my painting.

I plan to start with a darker base tone and end up using Mephiston/Wild Riders mix as the final highlight instead of the Troll Slayers Orange. Going by the color wheel, it looks like Xereus Purple or Screamer Pink could be a good base colors to start with? I could then work into Khorne and Mephiston and apply a red glaze to tie the colors together? But I am still new painting though and I don't have any test models to try this on to see if it will work so I thought I would get some advice from those who have experience painting darker reds. Thank you for reading.

You could try just starting from your base colour, then develop the shading by adding drops of black ink it. Increase the ratio of black to red as you deepen the shadows.

How dark do you want the red to be? I used a dark brown base and worked up to red on the robes on my techpriest.

I think starting with xereus purple or screamer pink would just end up looking more purrple/ pink instead of red.

Thanks for your replies guys. That Is a really nice looking Tech Priest! Definitely has that grim dark tone while popping out nicely in all the right places. I think that dark brown base will be a great idea for the Ryza Skitarii i have planned.

Im sorry i couldn't find a better source image for the colors i am looking for. #6533 or #6536 is the sort of look i would like, a dark wine red but maybe more matte and less glossy.

That's actually really easy to do!

Khorne Red is basically that, spot on, when applied over a Chaos Black primer+ Rhinox Hide basecoat.
