Howdy all,

So last week (wednesday) I threw down some dice with a new player in town, Victor Torres. An avid space marine player, Victor plays space marines, and space marines... and more space marines. To prepare for our upcoming ITC tourney on the 25th (look for the rep!) we put together our best and threw some dice. I wanted to test something new, so my list was a bit... different.

Sorry for no Scribe lists, we kinda scribbled them down post game.

Mission and Deployment
I won the roll off and we played ITC Mission 1. Victor took Headhunter, Big Game Hunter, and Recon. I took Headhunter, Recon, and Old School.

We rolled Dawn of War deployment, and I lost first turn (and failed to seize). Deployment looked like this:







Ultrasmurfs Turn 1
Movement was simple on victors side: he didn't move... lol.

His psychic phase saw him cast Might of Heroes on the Raptor, and some other auto-morale pass and negate MW power on Gulliman.

Shooting of his proved to be pretty effective. Gulliman was in range of everyone, and he overchanged all the plasma. The results were: 1 PBC dead, a second taken to 8 wounds. He killed 2 plaguebearers (who resurrected) and plinked one nurgling. He also killed 7 or so Poxwalkers from my largest squad. One hellblaster did double overheat and died.



Victor scores 1 for objective, 1 big game hunter, 1 recon (later we realized that his middle scouts could not control all 4 quarters per the rules) and 1 for killing something. Score is Ultramarines 3-DG 0.

Death Guard Turn 1
Plaguebearers walk up, both DP's advance as do typhus and all my poxwalkers. Nurglings shuffle around their hidey hole to charge some snipers.

Psychic phase sees me get a super smite and roll a 1 to wound (even with a reroll!). I also get off virulent blessing on the PB's.

Shooting proves to be... lackluster. I plink an intercessor with a mortar, but I do manage to wipe his middle scouts.

In assault I declare a 7" charge from my plaguebearers into his forward intercessors. I roll a 4 and 2. I reroll the 2... and roll a 1. I lose 3 plaguebearers to overwatch. Bleh. Mu nurglings all charge, I lose a base in CC, but not much else.







Death Guard score 1 for recon, 1 for objectives, 1 for old school, and 1 for kill something. Death guard hold more, but no one killed more. Score is Ultramarines 3-Death Guard 5.

Ultrasmurfs Turn 2
Victor scoots his line back further into the corner. His raptor flies over my lines, plopping behind to target all my support elements. His scouts in CC with nurglings fall back.

In his psychic phase he casts might of heroes and everything else on gulliman.

Shooting he proves pretty effective, whittling one more PBC to 2 wounds and my third goes to 10 wounds. In the backfield his raptor unloads on both spawns and my DP, but luck is with me and none of them die. He kills more poxwalkers and a couple plaguebearers, his scouts take a nurgling to 1 wound left. One or two more hellblasters kill themselves.




Victor scores 1 for objective, but did not kill anything this turn. Bad luck :/ Ultramarines 4-Death Guard 5.

Death Guard Turn 2
My movement is simple: ADVANCE! Plaguebearers shamble up, there are 23 left now. Poxwalkers all advance, and my last two PBC's advance. My Warlord prince and both blightspawn move up to kill his raptor. Nurglings move to re-engage, and my other DP flies to the front. I drop my Blightlords 9" off his lines, but I forgot about auspex :( He uses all his remaining 4 CP killing the lords with plasma (he loses 1 hellblaster to overheats)

Psychic phase sees him deny my blessing, I plink a scout with smite, and stupidly cast miasma on my warlord prince (useless...).

Shooting sees my Spawns roll terribly for number of shots, even with a reroll, leaving his Raptor with 7 wounds remaining. Everything else is out of range.

Assault my plaguebearers and forward DP make it into his intercessors, but he rolls hot for saves, and somehow two live. My other DP charges his raptor, losing 6 wounds on overwatch! And even with 8 attacks (one 6), it only takes 4 wounds leaving it with 3 left.... grrr. My nurglings make it into his couts again, he polishes off one unit.






Death guard kill nothing, but ultramarines were able to claim some nurglings for 1 point. Ultramarines killed more as well. Death guard get 1 for objectives, 1 for hold more, and 1 for recon. Death Guard also control and contest 5 objectives for 1 bonus. Score is Ultramarines 6-Death Guard 9

Ultrasmurfs Turn 3
Victors movement is again to fall back.

Psychic phase is pretty bleh, he gets might and his other power on Gulliman, but fails nullzone twice!

Shooting is pretty epic, he claims both of my PBC's, but the leftmost one explodes! This results in 3 mortal wounds on his raptor killing it. He unloads a bunch in the plaguebearers, but my rolls are with me and they live ohly losing a few.

Gulliman and his psycher charge in, but he splits his attacks; the results are my demon prince is left with 3 wounds, and he picks up 3 or 4 more plaguebearers. I roll a 1 for morale and 4 more come back... lol I love these guys

I forgot pics this turn as it was last turn.

Victor killed 2 units, so gets 1 for kill 1, and he secured one objective with his remaining scouts for 1. He scores 2 Big Game Hunter. Score is Ultramarines 10- Death Guard 9.

Death Guard Turn 3

Because it is last round, I wanted to just see if I could kill gulliman. Results? He is left with 3 wounds. I also kill his scouts down to 3, so my nurglings can hold the objective there (3 nurglings vs Talion and 2 scouts).

Death Guard killed the Raptor on his turn (I could have killed something else, we just wanted to see if I could get gulliman) for 1 point, and I held an objective for 1. It is the last round, I score 1 for recon, and 2 for old school. I alsoi hold more, but victor killed more.

Final score: Ultramarines 11-Death Guard 15

Victory for the Death Guard!

Post Game Thoughts
Spoiler:
This was a good game that showcased what my army was not really good at: getting to someone. This also showed I really need something to reach out and touch my opponent early. Typhus and the Poxwalkers felt like a huge waste here, because they pretty much held half the table, but couldn't contribute much more than that. Not to mention both Victor and my dice were all over the place.

It was a great game, and because of it, I picked up two new Helverins to add to my list
