Title basically says it all. I'm currently looking for a new book series to get into while ma boi Salvatore writes more Drizzt content. As I prefer to start at the earliest point in the timeline, but not entirely opposed to skipping around, is there a list of the books in order of events, or what is the recommended read order?

40k isn't, generally speaking something with a set novel reading order with a few notable exceptions.

Assuming you lack a favorite 40k faction, (if you ahve one let us know and that'll help) I'll reccomend a couple of series starters that are worth looking into.

Eisenhorn: Xenos: widely considered one of the best 40k novels out there. despite not really dealing with space marines etc.

Space Wolf: an Oldy by a goody. If your intreasts go towards the sons of Fenris start here.

Horus Rising: the first novel of the Horus Heresy series, this is where it all begins.

Ciaphas Cain: For the Emperor - absolutely amazing, great for a lighter read.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

The Imperium and Necrons hold the most interest. Reading order isn't really important for me, but I'd prefer to be able to get into the setting. That hasn't stopped me before, though it was accidental. For instance, I read book six of game of thrones before any of the others. Didn't understand the setting, but still enjoyed it nonetheless, and with Forgotten Realm's I started out of order but it was set up in such a way, and it was early enough in the series, that I was still able to almost fully grasp what was happening.

well the Imperium is who 99% of the books feature simply due to the fact that a human protagionist is easier to relate to.

That said maybe try Damnosl It's an Ultramarines vs Necrons story. very self contained and stand alone.

World Engine tells the story of the ACs VS Cron World Engine. Stand alone book.
Was okish in parts, poorer in others.

Dead Men Walking has Death Korps of Krieg fighting Necrons on a Hive World. It's pretty highly rated by a few people on here, although I thought it was fairly average.

I'm currently reading the Yarrick omnibus and think it's great. I also love the Gaunt's Ghosts series. Seconded for Ciaphas Cain books as well if you want a lighter read.

I recommend the Sisters of Battle series by James Swallow. The second novel deals with Necrons and I feel like he did an excellent job of showing light on factions not seen to often in 40k fiction.

Definitely read Flight of the Eisenstein. Probably the best 40k/HH/BL work ever written.

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.
