Long-time 40k player here asking for advice as he gets into 30k. I’m into the Horus Heresy novels and dig the Sons of Horus, so I’ve been collecting some 30k stuff as I buy 40k and Blood Bowl stuff from FW, so I’ve got a Spartan, 45+ Sons of Horus upgrade things (heads/ torsos/ shoulder pads), two contemptor mortis, and a boatload of HQ. Finally getting around to putting a list together. I’m thinking 3000 pts. so I can later both expand into bigger points totals and reorganize so I can also play in 2k and 2.5k games. The only thing I’m really married to is the Spartan rush… I’m a big fan of the Spartan model and enjoy that in 30k, unlike in 40k 8th ed, you can sink a ton of points into one kitted out squad in a mean transport and throw it in the enemy’s face for maximum damage without being shot to death by armies with lots of guns and millions of cultists/ guardsmen.
Here’s what I’ve been thinking –

Faction: Sons of Horus (Traitor)
Rite of War: The Long March
HQ:
- Maloghurst the Twisted (joins Vet Squad 1) [140]
- Primus Medicae Consul (Cataphractii Terminator Armor; Joins Justaerin) [130]
Elites:
- Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought (2x Twin-Linked Lascannons) [185]
- Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought (2x Twin-Linked Lascannons) [185]
- 2x Apothecaries (1 w/ combi-plasma, joins vet squad 1; 1 w/ power sword, joins vet squad 3) [110]
- 10x Justaerin Terminators (4x Pairs of Lightning Claws) [515]; DEDICATED TRANSPORT: Spartan Assault Tank [305]
Troops:
- (1) 10x Veteran Tactical Squad (9x Combi-Plasma; Sergeant w/ combi-plasma & power sword; Marksmen; in Termite) [270]
- (2) 10x Veteran Tactical Squad (Combi-Plasma; Marksmen – Deploy via Outflank) [260]
- (3) 9x Veteran Tactical Squad (4x Power Weapon & BP; 1x Heavy Chainsword; 3x CCW & BP; Sergeant w. Power Weapon & BP; Weaponmasters; in Anvillus) [203]
Fast Attack:
- Termite [75]
- Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod [100]
- Primaris Lightning Strike Fighter (4x Kraken Missles; Battle Servitor Control) [220]
Heavy Support:
- Fire Raptor (Autocannons) [220]

I did the math quickly, but it comes out to 2,808 pts, so 192 to spare. I’d be open to switch stuff out (especially HQ, since I have so many of them – I just thought a terminator praetor with MC paragon blade in the Justaerin would be overkill, whereas the Primus Medicae can hold his own plus he makes the Justaerin that much more of a monstrously hard-to-kill squad). Also, I don’t know if vet squad 3 is legal in the Anvillus… maybe I should replace them with reavers? Possibly 15x jump pack reavers to avoid the 100 pts. for the drop pod? Also, I don’t have a Fire Raptor yet, so I could take a tank instead if it would be good to have more stuff on the table in the first turn.

Overall, the idea is the contemptors hide and either intercept or try to target armor in turn 1 together with the Spartan and/or I rush in with the Spartan and pop it together with the termite’s arrival and the drop pod’s arrival. The combi-plasma vets, the anti-armor lightning strike, and the fire raptor (or tank) operate around the Spartan rush, hampering the opponent’s ability to deal with the troops/ terminators. I’m open to other suggestions, though --- should I take 20x-man tactical squads instead of my vets? Should I take scimitar jetbikes with meltas (those are cool)? Should I not use Justaerin in the Spartan but embark something else (I have plenty of HS slots so no need for dedicated)… let me know what you guys think.

Thanks so much in advance.

In case the lack of response is due to my list being a vague/ inexact one, here's a more concrete suggestion at exactly 3k points.

HQ:
- Primus Medicae (Cataphractii Terminator Armor; joins Justaerin) [130]
- Maloghurst the Twisted (joins veteran squad 1) [140]
Elites:
- Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought (2x Twin-Linked Lascannons) [185]
- Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought (2x Twin-Linked Lascannons) [185]
- 1x Apothecary (Power weapon; in veteran squad 1) [55]
- 10x Justaerin Terminators (3x Power Fists; 3x Pairs of Lightning Claws; ) [515]
- DEDICATED TRANSPORT: Spartan Assault Vehicle [305]
Troops:
- (1) 10x Veteran Tactical Squad (9x Combi-Plasma; Marksmen; Sergeant w. Power Weapon; in Termite) [260]
- (2) 10x Veteran Tactical Squad (8x Combi-Plasma; Sergeant w. Power Weapon; Marksmen; Deploy via Outflank) [250]
- (3) 10x Veteran Tactical Squad (8x Combi-Plasma; Sergeant w. Power Weapon; Marksmen; Deploy via Outflank) [250]
Fast Attack:
- Termite [80]
- Primaris Lightning Strike Fighter (4x Kraken Missles; Battle Servitor Control; Ground-Tracking Auguries) [230]
Lord of War:
- Typhon Siege Tank (Armored Ceramite) [415]

The Lightning Strike Fighter could be replaced by 3 Javelin speeders with Multi-Meltas and would leave a few points to spare (actually, I could field only 9x Justaerin and drop the apothecary's power weapon and end up with enough points to purchase 1 Javelin even with the lightning strike). This is tempting b/c the Lightning Strike is the only thing that offers a chance for my opponent's interceptors to work... that said, I really dig the strafing run + tankhunter + armorbane combo it provides for a 4-missles-in-one-turn bag of death. Even if you're not a SoH player, let me know what you think/ i.e. how you'd feel facing this list.

So the first turn of the game, you will have a Spartan (with the Justaerin and Medicae), two Contemptor Dreads, and a Typhon Siege tank? Four models in total? What Rite of War will you be using?

Couple notes:
Veteran's no longer have Marksmen, it's now Scout. (see 30K FAQ. You might want to rethink the all combi-plasma's in that case. Those guys ain't fearless either, and nothing is more frustrating then losing a 3 guys in a 10 model squad and failing that morale check. And it's even worse in close combat. Every squad should have a Vexcilla.

Interceptor works on anything that arrives by reserve rolls (like deep strike, outflank, the Subterranean Assault rule...). And of course Augry Scanners are fantastic for a free round of shooting at deep striking units, but also pushes any infiltrators or scouts further away from you.

The great thing about SoH is you are able to play this style of list. Other Legions get pigeon holed into a particular style of It's not even close to my style of list at 3,000 points, but this list could work. You should be a little concerned about objectives, as you only have four squads that can take them. The Justaerin are the brute squad, meant to take on another brute squad. Anything else and you are wasting them. So really, you are depending on three ten model MEQ squads using reserves to deploy onto the table and take objectives. I love Justaerians, but I'm not sure how your Brute Squad will fare against another Spartan + Brute Squad + Primarch. At 3,000 points, that's the standard. Spartan, Brute Squad, and Primarch.

You could shave some points off by using a couple Sicarian Arcus tanks instead of the Typhon. They will definitely have more shots and maneuverability at the price of durability, but this is 7th edition. One lucky Lascannon shot and any vehicle is toast. Or, you could use say an Arcus and Venerator and still have points left over. That way you would get both one of the best tank hunters (the Venerator) and good anti-infantry.

The Justarieans are listed as 10 models, with 3x Power Fists, 3x Lightning Claws. Are the other 4 just combi-bolters and a power weapon? You might want to look into a chain fist or two, and definitely get a multimelta in there. Maybe a combi-melta or two as well for the charge? Just remember, power fists, chain fists or anything that strikes at initiative 1 doesn't benefit from Merciless Fighters.

The Primaes Medicae and 1 Apothecary- I wouldn't even bother with Power Weapons. If they get into close combat, something has gone wrong. You might want Artificer Armor and an Augry Scanner instead.

On the Lightning: Battle Servitor Control seems redundant when you are running it with 4x Kraken Missiles with Armorbane. The Ground Traking Augries (Strafe special rule) has so many exceptions, that it's not worth it in my mind, especially when the aircraft is BS4 and comes with TLLC. Most of the Lightnings I see are always equipped with the Ramjet Diffraction Grid. That's one of the best defenses you could put on an aircraft! With so much anti-tank already in the army, and with two Contemptor Mortis dreads, what's the purpose of the Lighting? What you need here is anti-infantry, so instead of the Kraken missiles, maybe Phosphex Bomb Cluster or Electromagnetic Storm Charges would be better? Or, as you suggested, maybe three Javelins would be better?

You really are lacking in bodies, and I think you will struggle a lot against Custodies which are built for destroying low model count, elite armies. In games with objectives, you will be facing an uphill battle. Deploying your only scoring units by deep strike and outflank means it'll be a foot slog for them to get into position. Last thing: You are not playing to the one strength of SoH: Mercilious Fighters where you get an extra attack in close combat if you outnumber your opponent. That's not a bad thing, as you more than make up for it in shooting, but you are lacking in the close combat department.

This is a unique SoH list, and I'm really curious how it functions on the table! It should do well as long as you keep your opponent at range. Good luck!
