Have a 1000 point tournament coming up next month, and I'm still fairly new to the game (~ half a dozen games at various points). I was thinking maybe something like the following:

Festus (unsure on spell)
Sorcerer (Blades of Putrefaction)
Harbinger of Decay (general, Grandfather's Blessing, Witherstave)

5x Chaos Warriors (hand weapons and shields)
5x Chaos Knights (glaives)
5x Putrid Blightkings
5x Putrid Blightkings

The warriors are there just to sit on a backfield objective mostly. Knights to flank and hopefully get charges off. Everything else I'm thinking would push forward and stay around the Harbinger for his command trait. Any thoughts? Any better loadouts? I haven't built the Slaves to Darkness models yet so those weapon options are just me thinking how they could be used.

Not enough models. You won't be holding many objectives with that list.

My other list idea using what I have is something like a GUO, 30 plaguebearers, 10 plaguebearers, and 200 open points. Do you think that might be better? What do you feel is competitive for nurgle at lower points?

I don't play tournaments at 1000 points, but the name of the game is typically to spam as many mortal wounds as you can, maximize summons, and have enough bodies to hold objectives.

I think your second list idea would be much stronger from a power gaming approach, though I'd even toy with the idea of splitting the plague bearers into 20 and 20 because they are now both equally viable to hold an objective, where as the 30 and 10 means that one is not going to last very long and be able to hold.

Bearing in mind that our summoning is skewed strongly in our favor at 1000 points since it doesn't scale very well, you can then fairly easily get another unit of plague bearers on the table to hold another objective late-game.

Auticus you should know better than to reccomend 20-man plaguebearer units! 30-10 costs less points and will out perform 20-20 every time. One 30 man unit will tank as much as two 20 man would because it has to loose 11 models before losing the melee hit penalty as opppsed to 2 (one off each unit). 10 can safely camp objectives without having wasted potential if it is never engaged, a 20-man unit doing the same thing just favors the opponent going after the other one while a quarter of the army is stuck on guard duty.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I have honestly never had any fortune with a 10 model squad of plague bearers, especially if I need them to hold an objective. They get leaf blowered off the table in a phase of shooting or combat.
